'Weak Hero' Season 2 Recap (Episodes 1-8): Is Su-Ho Alive?
Weak Hero Class 2 has finally hit our screens 2 years after its successful first season. Class 2 takes off with Si-Eun at Eunjang High School, the only institution that’ll accept him after what he’s done. He’s still plagued by guilt over what happened to his best friend, Su-Ho, who is still in a coma, and doesn’t want that situation to repeat itself at the new school. So he keeps to himself, just as before, and hopes no one will “cross the line” with him. Of course, this isn’t really possible because boys want to be friends or they want to be bullies. Rumors have spread about what Si-Eun did at his previous school and the reason he’s at this place for misfits, so for the most part, people try to stay away from him. But one boy, Jun-Tae, musters up the courage to talk to Si-Eun because he thinks he’s the only person who can help him. Will this lead to a powerful friendship? Or will Si-Eun remain an outcast and never get over Su-Ho? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
What Does Jun-Tae Do With The Phones? The conflict of Weak Hero Class 2 emerges through a chain reaction that starts off at the school but reaches the big boss. In this universe, there’s a schoolboy group of criminals called the “Union.” Every school in the area is a part of this group, except for Eunjang High School. Choi Hyo-Man, the school’s big bully, I suppose, hopes to join the Union, but he’s been struggling to do it because the leader of the “Union,” Baek-Jin, only wants Park Hu-Min (Baku) to join. Hu-Min is a basketball player who also would seem like a typical bully but is a good person at heart with the strength and power of a strong leader. Anyway, Hu-Min is currently not at school because of a suspension, so Hyo-Man gets the “nerds” of the school (all the short boys wearing glasses) to collect phones for the “Union” to sell. Jun-Tae is one of these boys, and he wants to break out of this cycle, only he doesn’t know how. When Jun-Tae learns why Si-Eun is at his school, he decides to ask him for advice. Si-Eun responds by just telling him about Newton’s law, but Jun-Tae’s interpretation is something like every positive action has a positive reaction. So, one morning, he puts all the stolen phones back.
Meanwhile, Hyo-Man is already in trouble because he wasn’t able to get 100 phones, so if he doesn’t manage in a week’s time, he’s out of the game. Jun-Tae then puts a “hotteok” as a mouth guard in his mouth because he knows he’s going to get beaten by Hyo-Man. Su-Ho takes over Si-Eun, and he says to the guy, “You’re being too loud.” Before Si-Eun can get beaten up enough to take on his angry young man role, a boy named Tak shows up to stop the fight. Tak is friends with Hu-Min, so he’s got a sort of upper hand at the school. This gives Hyo-Man an idea. Hyo-Man then deduces a plan to get Si-Eun and Tak to fight. Jun-Tae tries to befriend Si-Eun, and though Si-Eun doesn’t actively participate, he doesn’t hate the company. Now, Hyo-Man brings Tak and Si-Eun to the same place, claiming to Tak that Si-Eun wants to fight and to Si-Eun that Hyo-Man is hurting Jun-Tae.
Tak is too quick to act and starts a fight before they can even talk it out. Finally, Hyo-Man and his boys show up to fight them both, but before they can get hurt, Baku shows up at the end of the second episode, saving Si-Eun and Tak, forging a new alliance at the school. Or rather, a beautiful friendship.
Why Does Si-Eun Fight Seong-Je?Ironically, it’s the good guys who get caught fighting in the alleyway, so they end up having to do volunteer work. This is a sort of starting point of these boys becoming friends, even though Si-Eun continues to distance himself because he’s afraid the Su-Ho situation will repeat itself. But when Seong-Je, one of Baek-Jin’s guys, threatens Si-Eun, Hu-Min realizes he has to keep his distance from the boy. In his case, too, he doesn’t want what happened to Tak to repeat itself. Seong-Je is the reason Tak isn’t an athlete anymore. But Seong-Je goes one step further and finds Su-Ho too. In order to keep Su-Ho safe, Si-Eun strikes a deal with Baek-Jin. He says he’ll stay away from the 3 boys, but Baek-Jin must keep his Union guys away from him, or they’ll all end up dead. Baek-Jin obliges because the guy he really wants is Hu-Min.
Meanwhile, Seong-Je beats up Tak and Jun-Tae again because Hu-Min still refuses to join the Union. This is when Si-Eun steps in, knowing he must protect Jun-Tae. He uses Seong-Je’s glasses as his weapon by breaking the arm off and stabbing it into Seong-Je’s foot. Seong-Je really enjoys this fight because it’s “fun.” He’s basically just a psychopath in this whole situation. He doesn’t want to lead as such; he simply wants to be the guy who fights people.
Does Si-Eun Go Abroad? In episode 5, Si-Eun has a conversation with his mother about moving countries because his mother worries that the same situation as last time will repeat itself. Si-Eun thinks it’s best he leaves too. Meanwhile, the Union decides to go after Hu-Min’s dad because nothing else is working for him, so Hu-Min has no choice but to talk to Baek-Jin. But, at the same time, Baek-Jin meets the CEO of the whole operation, Choi, the only adult in this whole situation. The guy Baek-Jin reports to. Now we know why he’s so eager to get Hu-Min on board, because without Eunjang, the operation isn’t complete.
At the last moment, before leaving, Si-Eun gets a call from Jun-Tae and realizes that he doesn’t want to leave his friends behind, proving he genuinely trusts these boys and cares for them. On the other hand, Hu-Min decides to work for Baek-Jin because that’s the only way his dad and his friends will be safe. Si-Eun confronts Hu-Min’s dad, who is an alcoholic and calls his son a good-for-nothing. Si-Eun makes him realize that the problem here isn’t Hu-Min but the old man himself (if only it were actually that easy).
I suppose it’s better to build bridges than burn them, and Si-Eun tries to have a conversation with Baek-Jin about his friendship with Hu-Min. Baek-Jin tells Si-Eun that he basically wants him to do his dirty work for him and get rid of the “variables.” At the same time, Jun-Tae and Tak are trying to get proof that Baek-Jin is stealing bikes. But all Jun-Tae manages to get is a sheet of paper with some names on it. Hu-Min tells Baek-Jin that he’s done with him and he can do whatever he likes with his friends and family, but he will never bend the knee to Baek-Jin. At the end of episode 6, Si-Eun gets a call that Su-Ho is in critical condition. Si-Eun is in the middle of the street and ends up getting hit by a truck at that moment.
Why Do Hu-Min and Baek-Jin Hate Each Other?Hu-Min and Baek-Jin used to be friends when they were in elementary school because Hu-Min saved Baek-Jin from getting bullied. Baek-Jin went from being a nerdy coward to the leader of the Union. The difference between them is how people react to being bullied. Hu-Min never changes, but Baek-Jin, who is the one who got bullied the most, in a similar way to Beom-Seok (CEO = Assemblyman), turns out to be the rotten apple.
What Happens To Si-Eun?Seeing Si-Eun in the hospital bed, Hu-Min decides to retaliate. He feels guilty for the whole situation and believes he’s the reason Si-Eun got into this situation. At first, Si-Eun’s mom sends the boys away too, but later, she apologizes for being caught up in her emotions and tells Hu-Min that he can meet Si-Eun. At the same time, Si-Eun has a dream where he’s in the boxing ring where Su-Ho nearly died. Beom-Seok is in the dream too, and he asks Si-Eun if the new boys are more important to him than he is. I guess the dilemma for Si-Eun is, “Should I give up and leave everything behind because Su-Ho will never wake up, or should I wake up and help my new friends whom I really care about?” The answer is obvious: Beom-Seok has been left behind, but Hu-Min and the rest need Si-Eun, so he wakes up and decides to help them. When he wakes up, Si-Eun says he needs to go to Su-Ho. He’s still guilty that he couldn’t save him, but this is his opportunity.
What Happens To Baek-Jin?In the final episode of Weak Hero Class 2, Si-Eun gathers all of Eunjang’s boys to fight the Union because they’re always going after them. Meanwhile, Si-Eun gets Seong-Je to switch sides because it would set him free from Baek-Jin, too. Seong-Je does give Si-Eun the stuff he needs to fight Baek-Jin, but he ends up keeping Si-Eun away from the big fight just for funsies. Eventually, Jun-Tae shows up to help Si-Eun, and they both defeat the guy who Seong-Je left behind to fight them. At the same time, Hu-Min and the rest of Eunjang fight Baek-Jin and the Union. When Hu-Min and Baek-Jin finally find each other, everybody stops fighting to watch. Baek-Jin has more to lose, so he beats Hu-Min till he’s on the ground. He announces then that Eunjang belongs to the Union, but they don’t yet, because Si-Eun is there to take up the fight next.
Si-Eun puts up a good fight, but Baek-Jin is too strong for him. Si-Eun manages to get Baek-Jin’s leg by repeatedly punching it with an improvised weapon he’s clutching in his fist, leaving the boy with a limp. However, Baek-Jin still nearly knocks Si-Eun out, but this is a part of the latter’s plan. Finally, Hu-Min gets up and punches Baek-Jin, leaving him gasping for air on the floor. Hu-Min announces that the fight is now over before everybody leaves, and the Eunjang boys rejoice in their victory. The 4 boys end up sleeping on the way back home. Suddenly, they’ve reached senior year, and time has passed them by. At the end of Weak Hero Class 2, Si-Eun gets a call about Su-Ho’s health. He’s finally woken up from his coma, meaning a new era is about to begin.
What Happens In The Post-Credit Scene? In the post-credit scene, we see Choi approach Seong-Je to be the next leader of the Union. Someone to handle his operations, to begin the cycle again. But the really shocking part is that, at the end of the post-credit scene, we learn that Baek-Jin died and the boys are attending his funeral.
