Sarawak needs opposition for true democracy, not one-party rule, says DAP woman

SIBU (May 22): The Democratic Action Party (DAP) will continue to play its role effectively as the opposition in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, ensuring proper checks and balances in the coming state election, said Sibu MP’s special assistant Irene Wong.

She said if Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) uses its position in the federal government to pressure DAP not to contest the state election, it would not only contradict the spirit of democratic politics, but also reflect a regression in democratic values.

“A truly healthy democracy is not upheld by one-party dominance, but by a system of checks, balances and free, fair voting,” she said in a statement.

“The core of democracy does not lie in which party governs, but in whether the people have the right to choose, and whether there are mechanisms in place to monitor government administration.

Wong cautioned that without opposition voices, any government could easily slide into abuse and nepotism.

“Like an unguarded mansion, over time, there will be encroachment and decay. Effective oversight and accountability are essential to maintaining a functional government, whether at local, state, or national levels,” she elaborated.

Wong stressed that the role of opposition is not merely to oppose, but to monitor, provide constructive criticism, and offer alternative policies.

“Voting for the opposition does not necessarily mean a change of government, but it ensures that different voices represented to help identify blind spots in policy-making and protect the rights of marginalized communities.

She also pointed out that while opposition assemblypersons in in Sarawak may lack access to administrative resources or development funds, they still play a vital role in proposing policies, monitoring governance, and representing the people’s voice.

“If there is no opposition voice in the system, it opens door to unchecked power, one-party dominance, and corruption,” she said.

She urged Sarawak voters to act rationally in the next state election and safeguard democracy.

“If you are dissatisfied with the current government, use your vote as a warning. Let them know that the only way to earn the people’s trust is through genuine service and listening to the people.

“Your vote is a mandate, not a trade-off. Don’t be discouraged by threats like ‘you won’t get funding if you vote for the opposition’ – that’s not democracy, that’s intimidation.

Wong emphasised that a democratic government should welcome scrutiny and opposing views, not suppress them.

“Sarawak cannot be a political greenhouse where no opposing voices are allowed. Democracy should be dynamic, filled with debate, oversight, and the potential for change.

‘When you dare to voice your grievances and cast that vote, you are already part of the change.

“Democracy in Sarawak should not be silent and unchallenged, but alive – with debate, scrutiny, and hope for the future,” she added.
