Fubar 2: Is Theodore Chips Working For Dante Cress? Is He Dead?
The character of Theodore Chips, who was introduced in Fubar season 2, became a nuisance for Luke Brunner and his entire team. For the most part, they felt that though he was an exceptionally skilled agent, he had had a change of heart and realized that he had done the worst possible thing by putting the lives of hundreds of civilians at risk. But they were wrong in believing so. Chip’s plan was way more wide-ranging than anybody could have imagined. So let’s find out what happened with Chips and if he was related to Dante Cress in any manner.
Spoiler Alert
How did Theodore Chips become a part of Luke’s team? After Dot’s death, Luke realized that he needed to act fast, as Dante Cress was on the move, and they needed to safeguard the power grids before the dreaded criminal caused a complete blackout. Luke knew that if they let Dante have his way, it would destabilize the world economy and possibly mean the end of the United States of America. Barry was able to access the drive given to Luke by Dot, and that’s when the team realized that Theodore Chips, the ex-MI6 agent, was working for Dante Cress and that he had joined forces with Greta and was trying to disrupt the power grids. The issue was that exactly 4 power grids needed to be turned off in order to cause a complete power outage in the entire nation and even Chips and Greta had no clue about which those were exactly. There was one man named Demps, who had done quite a bit of research in the field and even warned the government about such a scenario, who knew which power grids needed to be targeted. Luke and his team reached Demps’ place, and at the same time, even Chips arrived there with his gang. Unfortunately, Demps wasn’t able to survive the onslaught, and he died a painful death. But Luke not only took Chips into his custody, he also made sure that he saw the names of the power grids from Demps’ notes before incinerating it.
What happened next surprised everybody, because Chips reacted in a manner that nobody expected him to, at least when he was taken into custody. He was a well-trained MI6 agent who could have used his skills to escape from the CIA safehouse, but he didn’t do any such thing. The man made it evidently clear that he was head over heels for Emma. It felt like he had forgotten why he had agreed to work for Dante Cress, and the only thing he did all day long was try to get Emma’s attention. Emma obviously didn’t even acknowledge his presence, but then there came a time when she let her guards down and decided to be a little polite to the man. Chips made unusual demands of Luke’s team, making it very clear that Dante Cress’ mission, his big plan, didn’t mean anything to him. When Luke was taken hostage by Greta, Chips told Emma and the others that he would disclose the location of Greta’s safe house only if Emma agreed to go on a date with him. So in between saving the world, Emma had to dress up and dance with Chips just to know where her father was. But these little silly demands of Chips made Emma feel that he was probably just a foolishly romantic person who was not as dangerous as people believed him to be. I believe that was what Chips wanted Luke’s team to believe. Chips played a masterstroke by saving Luke’s wife, Tally’s life, and by doing so he completely won over the Brunner family. They accepted that Chips had finally realized that he had not done the right thing by going rogue, and now he wanted to make up for the damage he had done.
How Were Theodore and Dante Cress related?Theodore Chips was manipulating everybody, because he knew that Luke would lead him not only to the power grids but also to the nuclear facility, and through him he could get access to the missiles. We came to know that the reason why he wanted to get access was that he was the dreaded nihilist, Dante Cress. Chips duped everybody, even the best CIA agents in the world. He pretended to be a lover boy in front of Emma, when all the while he was just manipulating her and making sure that she didn’t doubt his intentions. Chips revealed that his father had not died during a mission but he was the one who had killed him. He justified his actions by telling Emma that Horatio Chips had tried to smother him because he got to know about a minister’s affair that was a state-held secret. Horatio was a good man, a true patriot, and his son turned out to be nothing like his father. I personally believe that Chips could have refrained from killing his father. I think the hate he had for his father, the urge to take revenge on him because he had tried to smother him, overpowered his rational side. That incident changed Chips’ life forever. He became an omnicidal maniac who wanted to eliminate 90 percent of the world population.
Another revelation that was made in season 2’s ending, was that Chips’ real plan was to start a nuclear armageddon, as he knew that the nuclear missiles would be launched the moment the power grid went down. He knew about the fail-safe mechanism of the US defense system, and he decided to use its loophole to his advantage. But at the end, Theodore Chips, aka Dante Cress, was not able to annihilate the entire world, and he ended up dying in the missile chamber itself. Emma and Chips had a faceoff at the end of season 2 where the former was able to escape from the missile chamber just in time and was able to lock Chips behind her. Chips got a painful death, but it wasn’t anybody’s fault, as he had called it upon himself. He might have felt in his last moments that he would be able to launch at least one missile into outer space, which would have been enough to start a nuclear war. But Greta made sure that that too didn’t happen, and the missile didn’t leave outer space. At the end, Theodore Chips got what he deserved, and Luke and his team once again proved their worth and their loyalty towards their nation.
