'Romcon' Recap: Where Are Heather Rovet & Jason Porter Now?

Heather Rovet, one of the victims who came forward to tell us her story in Prime Video’s original documentary, Romcon, correctly stated that, in a romance fraud, a person loses much more than just their money. The perpetrator robs them of their ability to trust. These scammers, in this case a man named Jason Porter, know exactly what the other person craves. They shape their narrative in such a manner that the victim feels that they have found their soulmate. But when that illusion is shattered, when the hope of a fairytale ending crashes, the victim realizes what they have lost. I can’t even imagine how a victim musters up the courage to get up once again and try to find happiness after such a harrowing experience. Hats off to people like Heather Rovet and all those victims who just do not lose hope even after being deceived in such a life-altering manner. So let’s find out what Jason Porter’s modus operandi was, how he misled the women he was with, and if he was ever caught by the authorities or not.

How did Jason Porter trick his victims?

Romcon broke Jason’s manipulative tactics down into 4 parts and tried to figure out how he left such an impression on his victims that they got mesmerized by him. Jason, who used multiple aliases like Jace, Don, etc., generally found targets on dating sites. He mostly looked for people who were above 40, had a good professional life, had been out of the dating game for quite some time, and were on dating sites just to see if they could find love again. He knew that such people got overwhelmed when showered with compliments. He knew that many of them did not have the self-confidence that a guy could ever find them attractive. Some of them were dealing with body image issues, and some just didn’t know if they deserved love, and so it was easy for Jason to please them and make them feel good about themselves. After finding an appropriate girl who fit his criteria, Jason literally swept them off their feet on the first date itself. The next step was to love-bomb the victims, i.e., shower them with compliments, make them feel special about themselves, be extra nice and chivalrous, and pretend he had found his soulmate. The next step generally took a bit of maneuvering as Jason tried to move in with them because that was how he got access to all their belongings. Also, the man didn’t hesitate before starting some venture together, like he did in Heather Rovet’s case, and maintained a shared bank account so that he could have easy access to the cash flow. Jason had mastered the craft of manipulation and brainwashing, so much so that the victims were blindsided, and they just couldn’t see all the red flags that the man had. The fourth and the final part of Jason’s plan was to plan a future with his victims and make them put their guard down. In Heather’s case, she introduced Jason Porter to her parents, and soon Jason became a part of the family. Heather’s father told the audience at Romcon that he never felt very comfortable around the man. He always thought that Jason wasn’t a trustworthy guy, but he refrained from voicing his concerns as Heather loved him, and he didn’t want to poke his nose in her personal life. Heather’s old man always felt that had he spoken, had he voiced his opinions, his daughter wouldn’t have gone through all the trauma.

How did Heather find out about Jason’s real identity?

I think Jason reached a point where he believed that he got what he wanted from Heather and that he no longer needed her in his life. He started taking things a bit too casually because I don’t think he was afraid of being put behind bars. He had served a sentence of 30 months back in the day, and so he knew what was the worst that could happen. His cellmate said that Jason was the kind of man who couldn’t be trusted and that he was so good he was pretty good at manipulating a person. One day, Heather’s mother noticed that a few of her rings and other jewelry had gone missing. She firstly confronted her house help, who very blatantly told her that it was Jason who had taken it. Nobody in the family could believe that Jason was capable of such a thing. A few months passed, and Jason started behaving quite erratically. He seemed to lose interest in the relationship, and Heather got annoyed as he was never home. Wherever she asked, he said that he was fighting a legal battle to get custody of his son and that the case was taking most of his time. Jason tried to frame his ex-wife too, by photoshopping a picture of their son and stating that his wife had abused him.

The truth was, Jason was spending time with other women and trying to win their trust. Heather reached a point where Jason’s behavior started affecting her mentally. She didn’t know where her life was going and what she was doing. Also, she realized that she was on the verge of going broke since Jason took all her money to support his lifestyle. Heather decided to log into Jason’s computer and try to find any sort of hint about what he was up to. That’s when the truth came out in the open. She saw that he had been chatting with multiple girls all the while. Also, she saw legal documents in his bag through which he came to know that he had been accused of fraud and other such crimes in the past. She realized that she was living with a conman, and her entire life was one big lie. Heather got so paranoid that she ended up calling her best friend and later even called the police, as she felt unsafe. The thing is, in such matters, when there is no evidence against the perpetrator, no visible signs of domestic abuse, and it’s the word of one person against another, the police also cannot do much. Yes, ideally the police should have taken preventive action, but then again, at that moment the matter did not seem very serious to them. They abandoned Heather, and I believe the helplessness she felt at the moment changed something inside her. Conman Jason Porter left her house after that, but she decided to not let him off so easily. Heather decided to fight for the cause of every woman that man had conned.

Where Are Heather Rovet And Jason Porter Now?

It took some time, but Heather gathered all the evidence she could against the man. There were victims out there who lived in constant fear after they got duped by Jason Porter. There were people who were so traumatized by the entire event that they just didn’t want to speak about it. So Heather took up the task of making the perpetrator pay for his actions. Journalist Jane Gerster believed that Heather’s courage, the evidence that she gathered, and the depths she went to to find anything that could incriminate the man became a turning point in the case of Jason Porter. As a result, on the 14th of April, 2025, the Ontario Court of Justice sentenced Porter to 2 years minus a day in prison and 3 years of probation. Did the man learn his lesson? I don’t think so. But now he knew that there were people out there who were not scared of him, who were ready to put up a fight.

As for Heather, the road to getting her life back on track was not that easy. It took her some time, but she did manage to find happiness, though this time she didn’t rely on anybody else for it. Heather made that trip to Italy that Jason had promised her alone, and she absolutely loved it. One regret that Heather had was that her father wasn’t there to celebrate with her after Jason was found guilty. But then that is how life is. Heather stays in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and she was an intricate part of the entire filming process of the Prime Video documentary. Heather is quite active on social media, and she uses the platform to spread awareness about frauds and to help those who have been victimized like her.
