'Un-Ex You' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: What Happens To Andy And Zuri?

Perhaps the best of cynics on this planet are the ones who’ve abandoned the hope of love. Finding someone who loves you the way you wish to be loved is an uphill task, but human beings are, by design, flawed, imperfect, and still wholly deserving of love. The latest Filipino movie, Un-Ex You, is a tender tale of a middle-aged woman doing everything she can to have a baby of her own, even though, ironically, the more people share this desire, the quicker the world falls apart. Kim Molina and Jerald Napoles pretty much carry the movie, with their natural chemistry and even better skills as lighthearted comedy actors. After his wonderful showing in Sampung Utos Kay Josh, Napoles once again shines as the man who can’t seem to catch a break.

What happens in the movie?

Zuri is a girl who was first abandoned by her impoverished parents and then passed from one supposed caretaker to another, each failing her in turn. When she was old enough to live by herself, Zuri built her career from scratch and started a logistics company with her best friend, Greg, and distant cousin, Brian. Zuri’s life was going pretty smoothly until she found out that she has a condition that leads to premature menopause, meaning that she barely has time if she wants to reproduce. Despite being a successful founder of a company, Zuri longs to have a child of her own, driven by a deep maternal instinct and the belief that her own child will love her unconditionally and never abandon her, unlike everyone else in her life. With time running out, Zuri sees her only ex, Andy, by the road one day and decides to pursue him, hoping that he could be the answer to her problems. Along with that, Brian falls for Andy’s sister, Beybeh, and he falls hard.

Where does Zuri go to find Andy?

After thinking about it, Zuri makes her final decision to pursue Andy. Brian tracks him down to a remote island called Sitio Halupi, while Zuri undertakes an exhausting five-day journey, traveling by boat and motorcycle to reach there. But here’s the twist: when Zuri finally meets Andy, she discovers that he’s lost his memory in an accident and has no recollection of her or the time they spent together. He lives with his mother, Mameng, and his sister, Beybeh. Seeing that Andy is the only person she can be intimate with, Zuri decides to stay and win him back, determined to rekindle the romance they once shared, dubbing this effort ‘un-exing’ someone. Brian shows up at the village too, hoping that he can court Beybeh and take his chance at love.

How does Zuri try to seduce Andy?

Zuri tries to get along with the villagers and Andy’s family, who are equally welcoming of their new guest. Zuri follows Andy out to the fields, deliberately making sexual overtures, even twerking at one point to catch his attention. Later, she ‘accidentally’ burns her finger while cooking, just so Andy can lean in and kiss it better. Around him, she can’t sit still or act naturally; instead, she bends and twists her body on purpose, making sure he notices her curves and every subtle movement designed to tempt him. When there’s a bug problem in the fields, Zuri even volunteers to be a scarecrow for days to impress Andy. When Andy shares his dream of building a quiet cottage in the village to settle down, Zuri nudges him in the direction of another perspective, suggesting he might be too willing to settle for less than he truly deserves. She explains that a good life shouldn’t just be about things that are merely okay; it should be about reaching out for something better. Zuri uses her logistics company to provide the village with a better WiFi system, as well as setting up a hall with desktop computers and other necessary electronics.

Why does Andy reject Zuri?

After Zuri’s relentless efforts to seduce him, Andy, too, starts to get the hint, and deep down, he likes Zuri too. Andy invites Zuri over to his place for a date, and Zuri can’t help but think the time has finally come for them to lay more than just eyes on each other. Andy’s room is covered with over fifty portraits Andy has sketched of Zuri. Andy confesses his feelings to her, but Zuri keeps pushing for them to get physical. Yet as Andy goes on and on about how deeply he’s fallen for her in just a few days, it rubs Zuri the wrong way. She storms out of the room, and they end up standing together in the pouring rain, where Zuri finally admits the truth: she only wants Andy to impregnate her; but her heart simply isn’t capable of loving him. Zuri also carries the guilt of Andy’s accident years ago, believing she was to blame because they’d been arguing right before he got into the accident. She feels that everybody she’s ever loved has abandoned her, and only her own child would love and respect her the way she wants. Andy tries to convince Zuri that he doesn’t care about the past, and he’s actually into her in the present, where it matters. Soon he realizes that Zuri isn’t worth losing his integrity for. Zuri goes back to Manila, resuming her daily life, leaving the thought of pregnancy behind.

Do Andy and Zuri end up together?

Months later, Zuri and Brian visit Sitio Halupi; this time, it’s for the inauguration ceremony of a bridge that will connect the island with the mainland, drastically reducing the transportation time. Brian finally tells Beybeh that he would like to continue seeing her, since he’ll have less trouble visiting her once the bridge is constructed. Beybeh is happy with that, and Mameng approves of their relationship. So now it’s down to Zuri and Andy once again, and one would expect, like at the end of every rom-com, these two will realize that love conquers all the other circumstances. But surprisingly, Andy reveals that he’s gotten himself a job in Germany, as a wheat farmer, and he’ll be leaving soon. Zuri, too, has dropped the plan of having a baby of her own, and she’s frozen her eggs, hoping someday she’ll want to pursue that option.

In Un-Ex You’s ending, the protagonists say their goodbyes in German, and we finally get to see that incompatible people shouldn’t be together, even though that means suffering a heartbreak in the process. Andy does the smart thing of choosing his own life over someone who won’t love him back, and Zuri realizes that human beings matter more than selfish intentions, and she can’t use someone to achieve her own ambitions.
