KUCHING, July 15: A new dabai tree will be planted at a more suitable and prominent location in Song town in a collective commitment to preserve the community’s heritage and agricultural identity following recent public outcry over the removal of the iconic tree at Song Waterfront.

In a joint statement issued today, Kapit District Council (KDC) chairman Ir Andy Lawrence and Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan emphasised that the new planting will not only replace the felled tree but also symbolise peace, community reconciliation, and Song’s continued dedication to its cultural roots.

“It also aligns with the long-term vision to develop the “Dabai Belt”, positioning Song as a brand destination for premium Dabai fruit,” they said in addressing the felling of the symbolic dabai tree, which had triggered widespread outcry among locals who viewed it as a cultural and agricultural emblem of Song.

The removal, carried out by the officer-in-charge (OIC) of Song, was made on the grounds of public safety.

However, both leaders acknowledged the oversight in failing to consider the tree’s historical and sentimental significance, particularly as Song and neighbouring Ngemah are renowned for producing high-quality Dabai under the official “Dabai Zone” designation by the Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development.

“After thorough discussions, we have reached an amicable resolution in the spirit of unity and reconciliation. KDC, YB Lidam, community leaders, and the Kong Leng Teng Tua Phek Kong Temple Committee have agreed to plant a new Dabai tree at a more prominent and appropriate location,” the statement read.

Moving forward, KDC has committed to greater engagement with local stakeholders, promising to consult and share landscape development plans to ensure better coordination, safeguard cultural assets, and enhance public spaces.

“We sincerely thank the public for their understanding and continued support. Let us move forward together in building a more vibrant and harmonious Song,” the statement concluded.

The decision to plant a new Dabai tree follows a public outcry, with Lidam himself voicing disappointment over the removal, describing Dabai as more than just a seasonal delicacy, but a symbol of Song’s identity, heritage, and rural economic pride. — DayakDaily
