According to a report by NST, the 53-year-old lost a staggering RM8.7 million to the scam following failed attempts to withdraw the promised profits, prompting her to lodge a police report on Tuesday (July 29).

Enticed by the promise of returns of up to 520%, she got in touch with the syndicate behind the advertisement. Over time, she was persuaded to transfer money into multiple bank accounts between May and July, with the total amount coming to RM8.7 million.“At the start, the woman received RM6,033 in returns. But when she tried to withdraw the remaining “profits”, it was blocked and the syndicate began demanding for more payments.
“She was also threatened that her account would be frozen unless she paid an additional RM500,000 in so-called ‘deposit’ fees,” said Azrul.
Police are now probing the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
Azrul reminded the public to always be on their guard and not fall for online schemes offering extravagant profits, especially those shown on social media.
“Be sure to verify investment opportunities through official platforms such as the police, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), or the Securities Commission.
“We also encourage everyone to be updated on the latest commercial crime tactics via the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok pages,” he added.
