KUCHING, Aug 9: The completion of the 96-metre Nanga Lasi Bridge, built at a contract cost of RM4.7 million, marks a new chapter for more than 2,000 residents from six longhouses in Julau, providing them with permanent access to roads and various basic amenities, which residents have been waiting for over 60 years.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the steel bridge not only shortens travel time but also offers a safer route that can be used all year round, unaffected by the rainy season or floods.

“With this bridge, residents now have better connectivity to economic centres, education, healthcare, and government services.

“This will have a positive impact on their quality of life and open up greater economic opportunities,” he said during the officiation ceremony of the bridge in Julau today, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated the bridge.

He added that the project is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts to develop rural areas inclusively, ensuring that people across the State enjoy equal access to basic infrastructure.

He stressed that the State government remains committed to implementing strategic infrastructure projects that can stimulate socio-economic growth, particularly in rural areas that have previously faced access and connectivity challenges.

“This bridge is tangible proof that the State government’s promises to develop rural areas are being translated into action. We want every Sarawakian, regardless of location, to enjoy modern facilities and equal economic opportunities,” he said.

According to a press release from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the steel bridge was built to replace the existing dilapidated suspension bridge, providing the local community with a safer, faster, and more comfortable route. — DayakDaily
