Seniors, a vital part of Malaysia's ongoing story
4 days ago
On Aug 25, a vibrant Tuesday morning at Taman Bukit Kiara, in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, a special event unfolded that was more than just a walk – it was a powerful statement from a generation that helped build a nation.
The SeniorsAloud 2025 Merdeka Walk was more than about fitness or fun – it was a bold, patriotic stride that sent a clear message to all Malaysians.
As our nation inches closer to becoming an ageing society, this event shows that seniors are not just observers – they are active participants. We are not a demographic to be sidelined but a vital part of our country’s ongoing story.
We should not be shy to show our love for Malaysia. Waving the Jalur Gemilang, singing Negaraku and chanting Merdeka are not just for the young – they are acts of pride that belong to every generation.
This walk proved that by actively engaging in patriotic activities, seniors can be a force for national unity.
The 30 participants, a dedicated group who helped transform the park into a parade of patriotism, are now part of SeniorsAloud’s legacy.
They showed that a simple act can create a lifelong memory and that a passion for your country only grows stronger with age. Their spirit was infectious. Participants like Ammy Khoo and Wai Lih Lin noted that the event perfectly blended patriotism with a healthy, active lifestyle. Anjili Doshi and Melinda felt it strengthened their sense of community, proving that inclusive policies that involve seniors in national activities are crucial.
This event, brought to life by the vision of organising chairman S.B. Lee, is a reminder for all Malaysian seniors: your experience, your voice, and your patriotism matter. We still have a vital role in nation-building, and our contributions should be recognised and celebrated. We believe that we should be included in national activities.
For instance, in the coming National Merdeka Parade to be held on Aug 31 at Putrajaya, shouldn’t seniors be invited and be represented?
This would signal a true commitment to inclusivity and acknowledge the invaluable contributions of a generation that has given so much to our nation.
As we celebrate our 68th year of independence, let’s not just watch from the sidelines. Let us stand tall, fly our flags high, and show the world our unwavering love for the country we call home.
We can be a beacon of pride for future generations, proving that every senior has a role to play in our shared future. The SeniorsAloud Merdeka Walk was a testament to this truth, and it’s a message we hope will echo across the nation.
