First date dining scam: Woman orders scallops, Wagyu beef, leaves man with RM2k bill

A MAN almost ended up paying a bill of over RM2,000 after he was involved in 'dining scam' with a woman he met online.

Relating his story on Facebook, the man identified as 'Lee Seven' said he met the girl on WeChat's 'People Nearby' feature and they agreed on a first date.

He said the girl asked him to pick her up from her workplace, but when he arrived, he noticed her coming from another location.

"She said she was hungry and wanted to eat and I suggested a few nearby restaurants.

"She quickly declined and said pointed to a restaurant in Seri Kembangan," he said.

In the restaurant, he said they ordered their food using the QR code on mobile phones.

"I did not know what she ordered, and I opted for the cheapest nasi lemak (RM6.90) and soda (RM3.50).

"The snacks she she ordered were served first - five scallops the size of 50 cent coins, covered in fried flour at RM157.90. Then came the four pieces of abalone coated in fried flour the size of two 20-cent coins for RM 189," he said.

He said her food then arrived and it was A5 Wagyu beef.

"She ordered A5 Wagyu beef (RM383.90) in a regular cafe, along with bird's nest soup (RM46.80) and two glasses of berry gin lemonade (RM157.60).

"Yes, she had two glasses by herself. She also packed some food to take home for her family which was also A5 Wagyu beef for RM 859," he said.

He said he did not know what she ordered as everything was through her phone.

"After eating, she made an excuse to leave and I went to pay and the bill was over RM2,000. As soon as I saw the bill, I knew I had been scammed and was even offered a meal for free.

"As soon as I went to pay, several employees immediately stood outside, pretending to look around, but in reality, they were just trying to prevent me, a "fish in the water," from escaping," he said.

He said he then said he wanted to call the police, and the store owner said okay, and specifically asked me to report to a certain small police station nearby.

"I rejected his suggestion and called the police directly, calling 999. Suddenly, the girl who had been gone for a long time walked back to the store and pretended to have left something behind.

"I guess the store owner noticed that I called the police and asked her to come back. We then came to an agreement and I paid for what I ate and for a few bites of the snacks which came up to  RM414.45," he said.

He said he then drove to the police headquarters, which was farther away, to report the incident.

"Everyone should be careful of these "dinner touts" and "wine touts", he added. - August 30, 2025
