The SARA aid officially began today, drawing large crowds at MYDIN in Subang Jaya.
Many beneficiaries queued with carts full of groceries, eager to spend the RM100 assistance credited to their MyKad.
However, by around 11 am, the nationwide verification system slowed down and eventually went offline.
This left payment counters unable to process aid claims, forcing customers to pay with their own money instead.
Many disappointed as they had to pay cashOne shopper told Sin Chew Daily that both he and his mother received the aid, giving them RM200 to spend.
They had intended to use it on household necessities, but were told at the counter that the system had crashed.
In the end, they had to fork out over RM300 in cash.
RM11 million has already been spent nationwide before crashMyKasih Chief Operating Officer Yuwendralan told reporters that the programme received an overwhelming response on the first day.
By 10.42 am, more than 172,000 people had used the RM100 aid, amounting to over RM11 million spent.
He explained that the system relied on 18,000 verification devices nationwide, and the sudden surge in users this morning caused the slowdown.
