Former KMT chair, Want Want manager among Taiwanese set to attend Beijing parade

Hung announced via social media on Tuesday that she had arrived in the mainland capital the previous night and would be present at the parade.

“Today, we are able to attend together and take part in commemorating this victorious moment in a national catastrophe. This is a response to history,” she said in her post.

“The war of resistance against Japan was a battle for the survival of the Chinese nation that is our common history, regardless of province of origin or political party,” Hung added.

The KMT, which then governed mainland China, and the rival Communists formed an alliance to resist Japanese aggression during World War II, which ended with Japan’s surrender in 1945.

After being defeated in the Chinese civil war in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where they are now the largest opposition party, considered more Beijing-friendly than the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
