200kW DC Charger at Petros MFS Batu Kawa Sarawak, RM3.20/min

After nearly two years after Gentari and Sarawak Energy Berhad launched the most powerful public DC Charger in Borneo, there’s now an even more powerful DC Charger in Sarawak. Located at Petronas MFS Batu Kawa in Kuching, this is a Multi-Fuel Station which provides not just petrol, diesel and EV charge points but also hydrogen refueling.

For this location, SEDC (Sarawak Economic Development Corporation) and JomCharge have deployed a Kempower DC Charger with a single satellite terminal equipped with two CCS2 nozzles. It can deliver a maximum power output of up to 200kW.

From the charger’s display, 800V EVs can get up to 200kW while 400V EVs can get up to 120kW.

What’s interesting is the price as this 200kW DC Charger costs a hefty RM3.20 per minute, making it one of the most expensive EV chargers in the country. Since it is part of the JomCharge network, you can get a discounted rate of RM2.88 per minute (10% discount) with the JomCharge Elite membership.

Without a membership, a 20-minute top up would cost you RM64! Assuming you can get a steady 200kW charging rate, that’s approximately 66kWh. Realistically, not many EVs can sustain such as rate for a long time and assuming you’re getting 120kW for 20 minutes, that’s equivalent to 40kWh which is about RM1.60 per kWh.

Time-based chargers are only more worth it for EVs that can take advantage of the high charging rate and it isn’t fair for EVs with lower DC charging speeds. kWh-based pricing would be a fairer way to charge users for EV charging as they pay exactly what they consume and not how long they charge at the station. If there are two EVs plugged in, you’re only getting half the rate and yet pay the same cost per minute.

Meanwhile, Gentari x SEB’s 180kW DC Charger at ICOM Square is currently priced at RM1.40 per kWh. You can even get 50% off with a Gentari Go Power Pass membership.

As a comparison, Shell Recharge previously used to charge RM4.00 per minute for its 180kW DC Chargers and RM2.80 per minute for their 120kW DC Chargers. This was before they made the switch to its current RM2.20 per kWh rate.

Besides the DC Charger, there’s also a 22kW AC charge point which is priced at RM0.10 per minute. If you have a JomCharge Elite membership, it costs RM0.09 per minute.

To activate these chargers, you can use the JomCharge app.
