BINTULU (Sept 16): The long-awaited Medan Jaya Flyover project here is now targeted for completion by June next year, said Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Dr Cassidy Morris.
He said the project has reached 54 per cent progress but admitted the department was not satisfied with the current pace of work.
“We believe this project can be expedited. After discussions with the contractor and consultant, we are confident that the project can be completed earlier, with June next year as the likely completion date,” he told reporters during a site visit yesterday.
He explained that while the project will be delivered in phases, with the lower sections expected to be ready first, the final stage will involve the flyover structure itself.
Although the contractor had previously requested an extension of time (EOT) until November next year, Dr Cassidy stressed that JKR would not accept that deadline.
“I have directed my officers to ensure the project is completed by June next year. Initially, we faced challenges with utility relocation, but those issues have now been largely resolved,” he said.
According to him, manpower has been increased to around 200 workers, with about 90 focused specifically on the flyover construction while others handle general works.
To accelerate progress, the contractor has been instructed to conduct night shifts. JKR Sarawak, meanwhile, has introduced a new initiative by installing CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring, supported by AI surveillance.
“For critical projects like this, we must have close monitoring. The CCTV system ensures safety and work efficiency,” he added.
On public concerns, Dr Cassidy acknowledged traffic congestion issues caused by machinery movement at the site.
“We have received complaints, and I have instructed my officers to strengthen traffic management. We are doing our best to minimise disruption,” he assured.
Funded by the federal government at a cost of RM137.7million, the project was initially delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and utility relocation works.
Dr Cassidy also reminded the contractor to remain committed to the revised schedule.
“If there are issues, immediate solutions must be found. We cannot afford to have another sick project,” he warned.
Meanwhile, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang said the flyover is a crucial infrastructure for Bintulu.
“The Medan Jaya flyover has been long awaited by road users. This area is the hub of Bintulu, with heavy traffic every day. We hope the remaining minor utility works will not disrupt progress further,” he said, while thanking the project team for their commitment.
