Head of State urges Malaysians to reflect on MA63, uphold unity this Malaysia Day

BINTULU (Sept 16): In conjunction with Malaysia Day 2025, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar together with his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, called on Malaysians to reflect on the historic moment of Sept 16, 1963, when Sabah, Sarawak and the Federation of Malaya united under the Malaysia Agreement.

Wan Junaidi said the formation of Malaysia was the result of thorough negotiations, starting with the Malaysia Consultative Committee (MCC), followed by a sub-committee that studied legal and administrative aspects.

Their findings were later presented to the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC), which produced a comprehensive report incorporating Sarawak’s demands.

The report was then tabled in the British Parliament and became the foundation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He acknowledged the vital role played by Sarawak leaders such as Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Temenggong Tun Jugah, Tan Sri Ling Beng Siew and Datuk Abang Mustapha Abang Moasli, who safeguarded Sarawak’s interests during the negotiations.

“My deepest appreciation goes to all who were involved in the negotiations and the signing of MA63, whether at the forefront or behind the scenes. Their contributions were invaluable in preserving Sarawak’s rights to this very day,” he said in his special address issued by Astana Negeri Sarawak in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2025.

Tun Pehin Sri stressed that Sarawak continues to uphold these rights enshrined in MA63 while driving forward a new development agenda focusing on renewable energy, hydrogen, digital economy, tourism, quality education, and modern infrastructure.

He added that such achievements were made possible because of the unity of more than 70 ethnic groups in Sarawak, who live peacefully in harmony and mutual respect.

“In line with the theme Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni dan Sarawak Maju Makmur Dalam Malaysia, let us strengthen our unity, safeguard stability, and build a more prosperous future together,” he urged.

The Head of State and his wife also extended their warm greetings to all Malaysians on the occasion of Malaysia Day 2025.
