KUCHING, Sept 18: MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuching has taken the lead in conserving endangered orchid species through the Juma’ani In Vitro Orchid Micropropagation (JIVOM) Project, conducted at its Orchid Laboratory in collaboration with the Sarawak Orchid Society (SARORSO).
In a TVS news report, MRSM Kuching deputy principal for Talent Development, McManus Sing, emphasised that the initiative aims to safeguard native orchid varieties using laboratory-based propagation methods.
“What makes this project special is that our students handle the entire process, from collecting seeds to regenerating threatened orchids.
“This not only gives them valuable hands-on experience but also plays a vital role in preserving orchid species for future generations. We are also looking into the potential of commercialising these seedlings,” he said.
At present, three student groups are actively involved and are slated to represent Malaysia next year by presenting their research at an international programme in Germany.
The project has also drawn the interest of SARORSO’s new patron, Dayang Nurjihan Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, daughter of the Sarawak Premier.
Her inaugural visit to the Orchid Laboratory today served as a major source of encouragement for the MRSM Kuching community to continue advancing orchid conservation.
To date, more than 80 orchid species have been successfully propagated, including endangered varieties such as Dendrobium anosmum, Dyakia hendersoniana, and Vanda dearei. — DayakDaily
