Many people believe that saving is a virtue, so they always try to save as much as possible in their lives.
However, a Japanese couple missed out on the "second life" they had been looking forward to because of their overly frugal lifestyle, and now they regret it.
According to a report by The Liberty Times citing The Gold Online, 74-year-old Hisako Sasaki (pseudonym) and her 76-year-old husband live in Tokyo. When they retired from a large company 10 years ago, they saved 42 million yen (about RM1.178 million) in savings and have a monthly retirement income of 250,000 yen (about RM7,016).
However, in order to save money, the couple only travel once a year, and rarely eat out or buy new clothes.
Hisako once thought that "even if life is simple, as long as the two of us are still together, it is enough", but she did not expect that after a few years, life would gradually lose its colour.
Every time their friends travel abroad or their family holds a party, they refuse to participate, and even regard "not spending money" as a virtue.
Over time, the couple interacted less and less, and because of different interests, they lived their own lives, and even their interactions with their grandchildren faded.
She admitted: "When I came to realize it, my husband was watching TV all day, and I only went to the library at most. There were several days when I didn't talk to anyone at all."
She said that her biggest regret was that she should have created more memories while she was still healthy. Unfortunately, the two of them, who have been retired for 10 years, have now seen a significant decline in their physical strength and willingness to socialize. They have missed the "period when they could use money" and are left with only emptiness in their later years.
Looking at her still ample savings, she said with regret: "I want to use the money now, but I don't have the energy to do it. Why did I save the money until now?"
You can't take money with you when you're born or when you leave this world. So, it's important to slow down, enjoy life, and live without regrets.
