Man refused money by wife jailed 11 months for assault

KUCHING (Oct 21): A man was sentenced to 11 months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here today for assaulting his wife over her refusal to give him money for the expenses of his four children from a previous marriage.
The 47-year-old accused pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same law.
The Section carries a maximum jail term of up to one year or a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
He committed the offence at a house in Petra Jaya here at around 7pm on Oct 15 this year.
According to the case facts, the couple was at home when the accused asked his wife for money to support his children from a previous marriage.
When she explained that she too needed money to settle some debts and cover their household expenses, an argument broke out during which the accused slapped her.
He later took his wife to his sister’s house where he choked, slapped, punched her in the face, and pulled her right arm.
The assault left the victim with bruises and injuries to her lips, neck, chin, and right arm.
The accused was arrested on Oct 16 following a police report filed by the victim.
Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted, while the accused did not have legal representation.
