Malaysia urged to prioritise national language amid globalisation

MALAYSIANS must prioritise mastering Bahasa Melayu before pursuing proficiency in foreign languages, a member of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s (DBP) Board of Governors has stressed.

Ahmad Fadhlil Mohamad Pakarul Razy said that strengthening the national language does not diminish the importance of foreign languages.

Rather, it ensures the younger generation has a solid foundation in Bahasa Melayu, which he described as integral to national identity and character.

“We must continue efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu, but at the same time, there is nothing wrong with learning other languages, as they are important for acquiring knowledge and meeting employment needs.

“However, Bahasa Melayu must never be neglected under any circumstances. It is not merely a communication tool but a reflection of our intellect, values and civilisation,” he told reporters after officiating at the Karnival Lestari Bahasa 2025, held in conjunction with the Kelantan-level National Language Month celebration.

Ahmad Fadhlil noted that the timing of the carnival is significant, given the rapid pace of globalisation and digitalisation, which are reshaping the way people interact and think.

He added that continued efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu are essential to ensure the language remains a medium of knowledge, economic activity, and technological advancement. - October 25, 2025
