Despite insisting that he didn’t take or carry any drugs, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed that Namewee tested positive for four different illegal substances after he was arrested at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, where the 31-year-old Taiwanese influencer, Iris Hsieh, was found dead.
According to PDRM, Namewee was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court on 24 October, but pleaded not guilty. The matter has been set for a trial on 18 December.
Namewee faces a jail term of up to 2 years and caning
PDRM found 9 blue pills on the controversial Malaysian singer, which have been confirmed to be ecstasy. If Namewee, whose real name is Wong Meng Chee, is found guilty, he may face a jail term of not less than two years, but not more than five years.
According to Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, anyone found in possession of these substances is considered to be in possession of the drugs and is also liable to up to nine strokes of the cane.
Namewee was also charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse. He pleaded not guilty and was released on RM8,000 bail.
“Unlikely a sudden death”
A Taiwanese doctor recently shared his thoughts on Iris’ death, which, according to her friend and manager, Chris, he claimed that the hospital mentioned “heart attack” as the cause of death.
Iris’ family was baffled by the cause of death, saying that she had always been healthy. A pulmonologist in Taiwan, Dr Su, said that given Iris’ age, a death of natural causes is highly unlikely, and said that Iris should be checked for drug residue in her system, as reported by TVBS.
