Govt accelerates water supply transformation with RM4 bln Grid drive

KUCHING (Dec 6): The Sarawak government is intensifying efforts to achieve full clean water supply coverage by 2030 through the Sarawak Water Supply Grid Programme, a long-term initiative aimed at stabilising, integrating and future-proofing water services across the state.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Utility and Telecommunications Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the programme, implemented in phases from 2020 to 2040, is designed to meet projected water demand up to 2070.

“Critical areas will be prioritised under the programme, which is now managed Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

“To support the initiaitve, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has allocated RM4 billion, covering raw water sources, treatment plants, distribution systems, upgrading works, pipe replacement, modernisation initiatives, and the Sarawak Alternative Rural Water Supply (Sawas),” he said.

Julaihi’s speech was delivered by Deputy Minister Datuk Liwan Lagang during the JBALB Sarawak 2025 Appreciation Ceremony at UCSI Hotel here on Thursday, which also recognised Excellent Service Award (APC) recipients and retirees.

Julaihi said that once ongoing projects are completed, rural communities long affected by water supply issues will benefit more comprehensively.

He also credited JBALB’s decade-long achievements as evidence of the agency’s capacity to transform rural water service transformation under the leadership of Director Datu Ir Ts Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan.

“Since taking charge, I have witnessed significant improvements in JBALB’s ability to deliver better water supply services.

“The ministry will continue to provide full support to strengthen water supply for the people,” he added.

Julaihi emphasised the importance of rapid response to public complaints, particularly in the digital age where unverified information can spread rapidly.

JBALB has been encouraged to leverage digital platforms and enhance coordination with other ministries and agencies to ensure accurate and timely information reaches the public.

At the same event, the JBALB Schedule of Rates (Sor) was launched.

The document will serve as a standard reference to improve transparency, align costs in water projects, streamline project assessment, prevent leakages and ensure consistent pricing all works.
