KUALA LUMPUR — Nizar Najib, Pekan Umno division vice-chief and son of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, saiys he has been deeply moved by the overwhelming public sympathy shown to his father during the 2025 Umno General Assembly.
He said the support received has strengthened the family’s resolve to continue seeking justice for Najib.
“I can see there’s a lot of sympathy for my dad. It’s very touching to see that. We hope to get a fair trial for him. We will never stop trying,” he told Sinar Daily on the sidelines of the assembly today.
Nizar added that he would personally relay the messages of support to Najib, saying the family remains committed to fighting for the former leader’s cause.
“I will tell Najib that there was a lot of sympathy and support for him. We will keep pushing all we can,” he said.
Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi publicly appealed to the mercy of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, requesting clemency and a reduction in sentence for Najib.
Zahid said the appeal was meant to allow Najib, who is also a former Umno president, to return to his family and the party.
He also insisted that the party’s loyalty to Najib has never wavered despite criticism that Umno joined the Unity Government to protect its own leaders.
In his presidential policy address at the Umno General Assembly, Zahid reiterated that Umno’s solidarity with Najib remains firm, and he urged delegates to continue supporting the former prime minister.
Najib was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and fined RM11.38 billion in December 2025 after being found guilty on 25 charges related to the 1MDB scandal. His request to serve the remaining sentence under house arrest was dismissed by the High Court earlier this month.
