Two perish in workers’ quarters fire in Baram, Miri

KUCHING, Jan 18: Two people were killed in a fire that destroyed a workers’ quarters in Baram, Miri early this morning.
In a report, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 5.59am regarding a fire involving a wooden workers’ quarters located about 40 kilometres from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 8.20am and found that a single-storey, semi-detached wooden quarters comprising two units had been completely destroyed by the blaze. The structure, measuring an estimated 40 by 30 metres, was already 100 per cent burned when fire and rescue team arrived.
Two adult occupants, a 37-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, who were staying in one of the units were found burnt to death at the scene.
Occupants of the adjoining unit, comprising five adults and one child, managed to escape safely during the fire.
The department said initial firefighting efforts were carried out by plantation workers using 30 fire extinguishers and three water pumps, successfully extinguishing the fire before firefighters arrived. Fire crews subsequently conducted monitoring at the scene and ensured there was no risk of the fire reigniting.
The victims were later handed over to the police for further action.
The operation, led by senior fire officers, involved 10 personnel and three vehicles, including a fire rescue tender, an emergency medical rescue services unit, and a D-Max support vehicle. The operation concluded at 9.16am after the area was declared safe. – DayakDaily
