The Malaysian man at the centre of a viral caning incident has shared his side of the story on Facebook, posting CCTV footage that allegedly shows his 12-year-old nephew threatening his elderly grandmother with a cleaver.

The 38-year-old uncle spoke out on January 17, just a day after a video showing him caning the boy and throwing a chair at him went viral and triggered public outrage.

In his Facebook post, the man defended his actions and expressed concern for his 76-year-old mother, who had been living with the child.

He shared multiple CCTV clips, he said, showing dangerous incidents that were difficult for an elderly person to handle.

Cleaver Incident and Death Threats Follow Viral Post

The first clip, dated 21 October, 2025, showed the boy hitting his grandmother and attempting to snatch her phone, causing the elderly woman to fall off a chair during the struggle.

The most alarming footage came from 9 January, which the uncle said showed his nephew taking a cleaver from the kitchen and approaching his grandmother with the blade hidden behind his back.

When the elderly woman noticed the weapon, the boy ran back to the kitchen and later returned without it.

“Tell me, how can a 12-year-old behave like this?” the man wrote, questioning his sister’s approach to educating the child with love.

After his post went viral, the man claimed he received numerous threatening phone calls from unknown numbers.

“You threatened me, said you wanted to kill me and my family,” he wrote in a follow-up post, adding that he expected to go to jail anyway.

Profile Locked, Arrest Made

He has since locked his Facebook profile.

The man had been arrested on 18 January at a house in Petaling Jaya, following reports made to the police two days earlier.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not more than RM50,000.

Public reaction remains divided, with some condemning the uncle’s actions as cruel while others believe it was justified discipline.

Several observers have suggested the child may require professional behavioural care and treatment.
