MCMC removes nearly 1,500 sensitive 3R posts after complaints
Malaysian regulator MCMC has taken down 1,493 pieces of 3R content following 2,486 public complaints, citing laws against defamation and provocation.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has removed 1,493 pieces of content related to religion, royalty and race.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the action followed 2,486 public complaints submitted between January 1, 2025 and January 31, 2026.

He said the Federal Court’s recent decision on freedom of expression does not grant absolute freedom to defame or incite extreme provocation on 3R issues.

“The Federal Court’s decision shows that we have the right to freedom of expression, but not the right to defame or to issue statements of a 3R nature,” Fahmi told reporters after a Chinese New Year event.

He clarified that 3R-related messages remain an offence under the amended Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The term ‘offensive’ in Section 233(1) has been replaced with ‘grossly offensive’ to refine the legal standard.

Fahmi also warned that MCMC can trace individuals who post 3R comments, even on threads separate from the original post.

He addressed the right to peaceful assembly, stating it is not permitted if the intent is to divide people or threaten national security.

This is particularly relevant ahead of visits by foreign dignitaries like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Fahmi said authorities, especially the police, are prepared to take firm action against any party disrupting public order.

He urged the public to act responsibly on digital platforms and comply with the law to preserve national harmony.
