Op Samseng Jalanan: Two teen motorcyclists detained, 15 bikes seized in Miri

MIRI (Feb 8): Two 17-year-old motorcyclists were detained, 15 motorcycles seized and 45 summonses issued during ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ conducted around Miri city between 11pm on Saturday and 5.30am on Sunday.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the joint operation was carried out by Miri District Police Headquarters Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division together with Miri Road Transport Department (JPJ Miri).
Road inspections were conducted in several areas including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pujut, Jalan Tanjong, Jalan Miri By-pass and Marina area.
During the operation, 75 local men and 11 local women were inspected along with 72 motorcycles.
“As a result, 45 summonses were issued by the police, while JPJ Miri issued 33 notices for various offences including expired road tax, absence of registration number, fancy number plates, riding without a valid licence, modified exhaust systems and absence of side mirrors,” he said in a statement.
He added that a 17-year-old motorcyclist was detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding, including performing a ‘wheelie’ stunt.
“Another 17-year-old motorcyclist was also detained under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for displaying a fake registration number on his motorcycle,” he said, adding that a total of 15 motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further action.
Mohd Farhan reminded road users to always drive or ride prudently, refrain from engaging in street thug activities, avoid modifying the original structure of vehicles, and not gather by the roadside in a manner that causes congestion, obstructs traffic or creates excessive noise.
He stressed that negligence by drivers and riders can endanger not only to themselves but also other road users.
