If your iPhone struggles to last a full day, the solution is often not a battery replacement or a new device. It is a settings reset of sorts. Apple gives users detailed tools to manage power usage, but most people never look closely enough to use them properly.
Here is how to get battery life back under control.
1. Start with what is actually draining your batteryGo to Settings, then Battery, and review battery usage over the last day and the last ten days. This section shows which apps consume the most power and, crucially, whether they are doing so in the background.
If social media, video or navigation apps show high background activity, they are using power even when you are not actively using them.
2. Reduce background app refreshBackground App Refresh allows apps to update themselves constantly. Many do not need to.
Head to Settings, then General, then Background App Refresh. Turning it off entirely is the simplest option, but you can also limit it to Wi-Fi only. From there, disable refresh for apps you rarely open, especially social, shopping and promotional apps.
3. Tighten location accessLocation tracking is one of the most power-hungry features on any smartphone.
Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Location Services. Review each app and switch access from “Always” to “While Using the App”. For apps that do not genuinely need location data, set access to “Never”.
Scroll further down to System Services and turn off features such as location-based alerts and suggestions if you do not rely on them.
Fewer location checks mean fewer background processes and better battery life.
4. Cut back on notificationsEvery notification wakes the screen and activates the processor.
Go to Settings, then Notifications, and review apps one by one. Disable notifications from games, shopping apps, promotional tools and news apps that prioritise engagement over importance.
5. Use Low Power Mode earlier, not laterLow Power Mode is not just for emergencies.
Enable it via Settings, then Battery, or add it to Control Centre for quick access. Using it during long days out or while travelling helps reduce background activity, visual effects and automatic data fetching.
It is designed to extend battery life without breaking core functionality.
6. Adjust display behaviourThe display is one of the biggest power consumers on any phone.
Under Settings, then Display and Brightness, reduce unnecessary activity. Turn off Always On Display if your model supports it. Disable Raise to Wake if you do not rely on it. Shorten Auto-Lock timing and avoid running the screen at maximum brightness unless necessary.
7. Protect long-term battery healthDaily charging habits matter more than most people realise.
Avoid leaving your phone at full charge for hours and try not to let it drop to zero regularly. Keeping the battery within a moderate range helps reduce long-term wear.
Enable Optimised Battery Charging under Battery Health and Charging. Your iPhone will learn your routine and slow charging near full capacity to reduce strain on the battery.
