Former Melaka CM's ex-political secretary, wife nabbed in RM3mil MACC probe

KUALA LUMPUR - A former Melaka chief minister's ex-political secretary and his wife were detained by graft busters on suspicion of soliciting and receiving about RM3mil in bribes.

Sources said the couple were detained at about 2pm on Wednesday (Feb 11) when they turned up to give their statements at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters.

"The MACC is investigating the pair over allegations that the bribes were sought and accepted as inducement to help a company secure appointment as the concessionaire for a sea reclamation project in Melaka.

"Initial investigations revealed that the suspect, who holds the title 'Datuk Wira', allegedly committed the offences between February and November 2021," the source said.

Sources added that the couple are also believed to have used the illicit proceeds to purchase a condominium unit in the Klang Valley.

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests, saying the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.

He said both suspects are expected to be brought before the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (Feb 12) for a remand application. - THE STAR
