The Night Agent 3: What Happens To President Richard Hagan And His Wife, Jenny?

In the previous season, our protagonist, Peter Sutherland, came across an unlikely man, Jacob Monroe, who called himself an information broker. He was a notorious individual who gathered intel on the most powerful people in the world and sold it to the highest bidder. In Season 2, Jacob blackmailed Peter into stealing information that forced the presidential candidate Patrick Knox to step down from the election, therefore making his opponent, Richard Hagan, the next POTUS. Now, the reason why Jacob wanted Hagan to become president was because his wife, Jenny, had taken donations from Jacob to fund Richard’s presidential campaign, without which he would never have been able to run for the election. In short, Jacob had dirt on the Hagans, which he knew he would be able to trade for a better price after Richard became the president. In Season 3, we found out that Jacob had been blackmailing Jenny to get information about Richard’s daily briefs. But why? Okay, this one’s a bit complicated.

Spoiler Alert

Jacob Made Richard President For A Reason

The last few episodes of The Night Agent Season 3 delved into Jacob’s past, where we found out about his sting to collect information against a Mexican arms trafficker, Raul Zapata. Unfortunately, during the operation, Jacob fell in love with Raul’s head of operations, Sofia De Leon, who wasn’t exactly aware of her boss’ illegal line of business. In fact, Jacob too was being blackmailed by the CIA, and his plan of action was to quickly hand over the intel to the authorities so he could escape Mexico with Sofia and lead a simple and peaceful life somewhere else. Alas, things didn’t go according to plan; someone told Raul that Sofia was a snitch. The show didn’t reveal who exactly gave him this information, but I think it was the CIA who threw Sofia under the bus, as they wanted to gain Raul’s trust so he would sell them weapons at a discount. I think this was also one of the reasons why Jacob targeted Patrick Knox, as he was once the director of the CIA and was likely responsible for Sofia’s tragic fate.

Anyway, after Sofia’s disappearance, Jacob was convinced that she was killed by the Mexican gun lord and therefore left the country to build an empire of his own so he could someday have the means to exact revenge on Raul Zapata. And this was where Richard Hagan came in. The thing is, Jacob knew that no matter how much money or intel he gathered, it would never be enough to take down Raul. He would need an army to destroy someone like him, and who had the biggest army in the world? The President of the United States of America. So you see, Jacob not only conceived the idea of making Richard the president, but he also nurtured it over the years to make sure everything went according to the plan. However, he had to move up the schedule when he was diagnosed with cancer. He didn’t have much time left and therefore made a few impulsive decisions to get to his nemesis. It could be possible that by blackmailing Jenny, Jacob wanted to know if the president had any information on Raul Zapata. Recently, his terrorist organization, La Fuerza de La Soberania (LFS), had attacked a plane, killing more than 150 Americans, and Jacob believed that the American government might be investigating the terrorist attack. However, Jacob’s increasing demands freaked out the First Lady a bit, and therefore she decided to sever ties with the information broker, leading to a shootout in the White House because of which she was eventually forced to confess to her husband how she’d taken a hefty donation from Jacob to fund their campaign. And in order to protect his wife and his presidency, Richard requested his friend, Adam, the Night Agent, to keep an eye on Peter Sutherland, who had been obsessively looking for Jacob Monroe.

Richard Stepped Down From His Post

In the midst of this chaos, Peter and Jacob’s daughter, Isabel, found the connection between Senator George Lansing, David Hutson, and Raul Zapata. David, who had funded Lansing’s campaign, had close ties with the Mexican arms dealer, and after David was arrested, Jacob visited him while he was being transferred to prison. It was through David that Jacob eventually found out where Raul had been hiding, and he handed over this information to Adam, believing it would reach Richard, who, being the commander-in-chief of the American military, would blow up Raul’s hideout before he could plan another attack on American soil. But you see, even though both Richard and Jacob had their country’s best interests at heart, they both made some really bad choices in life to make their ambitions come true. Jacob had the chance to tell the truth to Raul and sacrifice himself to protect Sofia and their unborn child, but Jacob loved himself a little more than he loved his family. Meanwhile, Richard had the option to step down from the presidency after he found out about the blunder his wife had made, but he chose his family and his dream instead. He ordered Adam to not only kill Jacob, but also honest agents like Peter and Chelsea Arrington to bury the truth. Peter and Chelsea weren’t the traitors to their nation. It was Richard, who was the real culprit who couldn’t even risk his career to protect the nation. I guess Adam realized that Richard was no longer the honorable soldier he knew. He had become corrupt like all politicians, which was why he didn’t kill Peter and let him expose the president, which would force him to step down.

Although the ending of Season 3 didn’t reveal the exact fate of the president after his crimes came to light, a news report revealed that Richard had pardoned himself and left the White House ahead of Senate conviction. It seemed like the senators might have wanted to conceal the documents to avoid a massive scandal that would taint their image on a global scale and therefore asked Richard to voluntarily leave his post. This meant he and his wife wouldn’t face any serious charges for rigging the election, taking funds from a notorious broker, and lying to the American people. He would get scot-free even after committing so many crimes, mostly because the party wanted to protect its reputation. In the end, Richard and Jenny signed some sort of media deal, which would likely keep their home running. With that said, I guess we will have a new president in the next season of The Night Agent.
