“Plain daylight robbery" - Malaysians Criticise Stall for Selling 'Expensive' Karipaps at Ramadan Bazaar

A photo of karipap being sold at a stall at a Ramadan bazaar has gone viral after netizens were shocked by its price, RM10 for four pieces of karipap kentang and RM10 for three pieces of karipap telur.

The stall, which appears to specialise in flaky, layered “karipap pusing,” displays clear signage showing the price tags. While the karipap look larger and more artisanal than typical versions, netizens were divided over the prices which sparked a heated debate about rising food prices and whether bazaar vendors are charging too much for traditional snacks.

“Crazy expensive”

As expected, the comment section was flooded with Malaysians expressing disbelief. Some users argued that karipap — traditionally priced between RM0.50 to RM1.50 depending on size and filling — should not cost over RM2.50 per piece unless served in a café or premium setting.

Another user said, “They’re running a business under just an umbrella, but the prices are as if they have 10 employees, a factory’s utility bills, taxes, and EPF. People like this we should boycott.”

However, not all the comments were negative. Some Malaysians defended the pricing, pointing out that the prices of ingredients have increased.
