WhatsApp May Soon Let You Schedule Messages

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature that would allow users to schedule messages for delivery at a specific date and time.

Users would type a message as usual, select a future time, and the app would send it automatically. The message would remain stored within the chat until it is automatically delivered. Scheduled messages would appear in a separate section within the chat information screen, where they could be reviewed or deleted before dispatch. If removed before being sent, the recipient would not be notified.

The feature is expected to support both individual and group chats. It would be available to standard users rather than limited to business accounts. For businesses using standard WhatsApp accounts, it could also provide lightweight scheduling without needing WhatsApp Business automation tools.

At present, WhatsApp does not offer native message scheduling. The app has historically positioned itself as an immediate messaging platform. Messages are either sent now or not at all. 

Users who want delayed delivery rely on reminders, manual timing or third-party automation tools. Competing platforms, including Telegram and iMessage, already provide scheduled send functionality.

Practical use cases include timed reminders, birthday messages, announcements in group chats, or messages drafted outside working hours but delivered during them.

There are technical considerations too. Proper implementation requires device-level scheduling that functions even if the app is not open, and potentially cross-device consistency for users logged in on multiple devices. WhatsApp’s multi-device architecture would need to ensure that a scheduled message remains synced and triggers correctly.

For now, the feature remains in development and is expected to reach beta testers before a wider rollout. No official release timeline has been announced.
