WHAT began as a simple walk to Plaza Merdeka in Kuching turned into a profound life lesson for a man from Sabah.
While heading toward the shopping center, he encountered an elderly woman who appeared visibly exhausted and distressed.
The woman, originally from Betong, approached him to ask if the Sarawak General Hospital was within walking distance.
After checking Google Maps and realising the distance was significant, the man initially told her it was far and continued on his way.
However, he couldn’t shake a feeling of unease.
“With every step, my heart felt heavier,” he recounted. “I just knew I had to turn back.”
Upon returning, he discovered the heartbreaking reason for her journey: her mother had recently passed away at the hospital.
Despite not being wealthy himself, the man checked his wallet and found some ‘ang pao’ money.
Without hesitation, he decided to use his limited funds to book a Grab ride for her and provide some financial assistance for her journey.
Reflecting on the encounter, he described it as a “divine appointment,” believing he was meant to be the answer to her silent prayers.
He shared his story not for praise, but to remind others that sincere empathy outweighs financial status.
“Compassion does not require wealth; it requires willingness,” he wrote.
His story has since resonated with thousands of netizens, serving as a powerful testament that humanity is very much alive.
