'Cold Storage' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Does The Last Scene Suggest A Sequel?
Cold Storage is a 2026 horror comedy film with a healthy dose of sci-fi elements that has been adapted from David Koepp’s 2019 novel by the same name. The plot is centered around a cold storage vault at the Atchison Storage Facility in Kansas, and an old Skylab research experiment, which ultimately turns a normal shift at work for night guards Teacake and Naomi into an unforgettably horrific experience. While the film is very superficial and convenient with its plot, it still makes for a somewhat fun casual watch.
Spoiler Alert
What is the movie about?Cold Storage begins with a brief introduction about how the Skylab space station had been home to numerous scientific experiments conducted by NASA, and how it was eventually decommissioned in 1979 and essentially destroyed through atmospheric re-entry. Although the authorities at NASA believed that they had successfully recovered and destroyed every piece of debris from Skylab, they had missed one small but crucial piece, as per the premise of the film. This piece, an oxygen tank, had landed at a small village in Western Australia, where a local farmer found it and immediately brought it back home to use it for business purposes. Capitalizing on public interest in outer space, the farmer put up the oxygen tank in front of his house, building a Skylab museum around it and charging visitors a dollar to see the object.
Years later, about 18 years before the present day, a biochemist, Dr. Hero Martins, receives a frantic call from a man from the same village, who claims that something sinister has crawled out of the old oxygen tank and pleads for NASA to intervene and save the villagers. By the time Hero is able to reach the remote spot, accompanied by anti-bioterror agents Robert Quinn and Trini Romano, it is too late for the villagers, and all of them have died mysteriously. Strangely, their bodies seem to have exploded, and a green gooey object is seen all over, instead of red blood. Examining the old oxygen tank from Skylab, Hero is sure that the farmer had mistakenly created the perfect breeding conditions inside the object while trying to clean it, which had now given rise to some deadly fungus.
It was this very fungus that had entered the bloodstream of the villagers, taken full control of their brains, and made each of them climb up to the roofs of their houses before exploding their bodies and killing them. Since the fungus’ one and only objective is to spread itself to as many living bodies as possible, it has made the villagers climb to higher ground, simply so that the spread from the explosion would be greater. Unfortunately, Dr. Hero Martins unknowingly steps on the fungus, which burns through her hazmat suit and skin, taking control of her as well. It is only because of her sheer will and mental strength that she is able to take back control at the last minute and kill herself to stop the fungus from spreading. Robert and Trini, traumatized by the experience, work with the American government to hide the tank containing the fungus inside a research facility. Now, 18 years later, Travis ‘Teacake’ Meacham, a night guard at a private storage facility, has no clue about the horrible danger that awaits him when he keeps hearing a mysterious ding at the place.
How does the fungus spread in the modern timeline? The main horror and sci-fi element in Cold Storage is the fungus that had started growing inside the oxygen tank that had originally been aboard Skylab. Numerous experiments were carried out on the Skylab by NASA, among which was an experiment with a deadly and infectious fungus that was known to spread easily among small animals, essentially turning them into zombies. The authorities at NASA wanted to test if the same fungus would act differently when taken to outer space, which was why it was stored in the laboratory aboard the Skylab in the first place. But the effects of outer space were totally devastating, as it mutated into a much more powerful form, which could easily spread among the largest and most intelligent of animals, including humans. Some of the organisms had made their way into the oxygen tank before the Skylab was destroyed, and so they found their way to Western Australia. While the film does not make any mention of it, there might even be a possibility that Skylab was decommissioned and destroyed by NASA only because of the experiment with the fungus having gone wrong.
When the farmer tried to clean the tank using dish soap and potatoes to remove the rust from the metal object, he unknowingly created a breeding ground for the fungus inside, which immediately got out through the fissures in the tank. After the death of Hero, the American authorities had completely burnt the village down to stop the spread of the fungus and locked up the contaminated oxygen tank inside a cold storage at the Atchison Storage Facility in Kansas. High-grade thermistors had been used to ensure that the extremely low temperatures would be maintained inside the storage room so that the fungus would not have any chance to survive or spread. As years passed, the US military moved out of the Atchison facility, or at least part of it, abandoning the cold storage where the fungus had been contained. The area had been taken over by a private self-storage company, with the fungus practically forgotten.
But the thermistors gradually deteriorated over the years, and as the temperatures started to rise, the fungus revived and started to spread, for it had never really died. All that it required was to get in contact with a living organism, and this is exactly what happens on the fateful night, as a cockroach somehow makes its way into the room and is immediately infected by the fungus. With the sole aim of spreading the fungus, the bug crawls out of the room, infecting a rat king along the way, and it eventually makes it out into the open. It is at this very time that one of the guards, Naomi, has her estranged ex-boyfriend, Mike, drive to the storage facility in a state of panic, as he has just killed his parents’ cat, Mr. Scroggins, for some undisclosed reason. Based on how the character has been presented, Mike seems to be emotionally and mentally unstable, because of which he owns a gun and is basically a dangerous man, even before getting infected by the fungus.
As his car squishes the infected cockroach, the fungus travels up into the trunk of the car and takes control of the dead cat, bringing it back to life only to spread itself further. It is mentioned that the extraordinary fungus, with superpowers from outer space, is constantly modifying itself to carry out its only mission of spreading itself further. Therefore, the cat now climbs up to the highest point at the place and kills itself, with its body soon exploding and contaminating Mike and a herd of deer that had been around. This causes absolute mayhem, as the animals and also Mike try to get into the storage facility in search of more targets. The owner of the storage company, Griffin, reaches the place in the middle of the night with his motorcycle gang in order to take some TVs that he had stolen inside one of the vaults. Naturally, this only allows the fungus to come into contact with more humans, and it spreads even quicker.
Does Ma Rooney survive?Ironically, the only person who does not want to live anymore at the beginning of the film ends up surviving the bizarre incidents going on at the storage facility. An elderly woman, Ma Rooney, is a long-time client at the facility, as she has a rented vault where she keeps various items from her life, particularly those associated with the memory of her husband. Tired of her frail and lonely life at present after the death of her husband, who had been the love of her life and her only companion, Ma Rooney plans to bring an end to her suffering inside her rented vault. She carries her gun into the facility, but decides to take a nap before taking her own life, and this is why she survives when the fungus outbreak takes place.
Ma Rooney wakes up from her slumber after hearing gunshots at the facility when an infected Mike blindly shoots at Teacake and Naomi. She hardly gets to understand the extreme emergency that has panned out but plays a crucial role in protecting the protagonist as she shoots Mike dead. The old and senile woman has no clue that she has taken down a zombie and mentions having shot Mike only because he was walking and talking strangely. Following this, Teacake ultimately guides Ma Rooney safely out of the facility, and crucially, she leaves before Robert arrives at the place, and so she remains safe, both from the humans and also the dangerous fungus.
What is the only way to stop the outbreak?Although the American authorities had left the facility unattended, they had not technically abandoned it completely, for one military officer is always kept in charge of remotely monitoring reports from the site and possibly from numerous other similar sites across the country. It is this officer, Ishani, who notices warnings about rising temperatures, figures out that the thermistors must have broken down, and gets in touch with the veteran anti-bioterror agent, Robert Quinn. The man is instantly alarmed about the situation, for he knows the risk of letting the fungus spread, having witnessed its devastating effects first-hand. He asks for help from the military, but mostly carries out the operation by himself, as he is one of the most experienced agents of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
The only way to contain the outbreak at the moment would be to blow up the entire section of the Atchison Storage Facility using a mobile nuclear bomb that is enclosed within a case. It is basically a suitcase bomb, although the DTRA agents vehemently refuse to call it so. 18 years back, the bomb had been created and put into the case as part of a contingency plan, but it had to be kept secret from the world since nobody had been told about the extraterrestrial fungus and its effects. Robert’s professional partner, Trini, had carefully hidden the bomb in the basement of her son’s house, technically putting the lives of her grandchildren at risk, as she considered it to be the safest place. Now, the bomb has to be taken to the storage facility and handed over to Teacake and Naomi, who have to place it in front of the room with the contaminated oxygen tank and arm it to blow the entire place up. That the government had forgotten about the fungus and cared very little about it over the years is all the more evident from the fact that even the suitcase bomb has gone somewhat faulty after sitting in a basement for so long, meaning its timer keeps resetting randomly.
How does Robert suddenly become a national hero?Robert arms the bomb when he hands it over to Teacake and Naomi, technically sending them in to die in the blast, and it is only because of the malfunction of the timer that the youngsters manage to survive. But Robert’s intention had only been to protect the rest of the country and the planet from contamination at any cost, and he was ready to sacrifice the lives of Teacake and Naomi, along with his own, to achieve this goal. Ultimately, all three of them, and Trini, survive as they manage to drive away from the facility just as it explodes, and so the veteran DTRA agent’s brave contribution needs to be celebrated. For so long, the army chief, Jerabeck, had only been trying to prevent Robert from reaching the spot because of some clash of egos between the two men in the past and also because the chief did not take the matter seriously. Now, Ishani secretly leaks all the research papers and warning reports that Robert had once written to the American government to the media. Thus, in a matter of hours, Robert Quinn is hailed as a national hero who had tried to prevent the travesty, while Jerabeck faces flak for having ignored his warnings.
Are Teacake and Naomi together? In the process of surviving the bizarre incidents from the fateful night and also saving the country and the world while doing so, Teacake and Naomi had also found love and support in each other unlike ever before. Naomi was genuinely surprised when her colleague wanted to know more about her daughter, Sarah, and about her difficulties being a single mother, as no other man had asked her before. Similarly, Teacake was also impressed when Naomi had wanted to know about the reason behind his uncommon nickname, for nobody had ever shown any interest in it. Thus, Teacake and Naomi are seen spending time together, as they are now in a relationship, and little Sarah plays in the distance, meaning that they have come together to be a happy family.
What does the last scene of the film signify?Cold Storage’s ending shows a deer in the wild walk up to the camera and then suddenly throw up a green, gooey substance at the camera, which is clearly a teaser that the story is not yet over. Although the central characters are of the opinion that the fungus has been totally destroyed and wiped off the face of the Earth with the nuclear explosion, this is not actually the case. Rather, it seems like one of the deer from the herd that had first been infected by the cat has still survived, and it is still spreading the fungus among other life forms. Since we know that the fungus is intelligent enough to modify itself to spread more easily and effectively, it might very well have come up with a means to stay alive for longer. Plus, we had seen the fungus travel up the tire of Mike’s car, raising the question as to whether the life form has now mastered the capability of traveling short distances through non-living objects. If that is the case, then the next attempt by the fungus to take over the world will be even deadlier, and Cold Storage might just return with a sequel to continue the tale.
