'Whistle' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: What Does The Post Credit Scene Suggest?

If you ever randomly find an ancient object, know that you’re in trouble! Corin Hardy’s Whistle is about an ancient Aztec death whistle that wreaks havoc and brings death to those who come in contact with it. The film begins with a school basketball player, Mason ‘Horse’ Raymore, being haunted by the ghost of a charred man. Even though his team won the match and they credited Mason for the final basket, he couldn’t really focus on celebrating. There was a sense of looming danger, and it clearly had to do with an oval object he kept in his locker. He destroyed the object with a dumbbell, hoping it would stop the charred man from following him. And while it momentarily did, as soon as he went to take a shower, his body suddenly went up in flames. Six months later, a new girl joined Pellington High, and she was assigned Mason’s locker, and guess what? That oval-shaped object was still inside the locker, waiting for its new target!

Spoiler Alert

What was the curse?

The ancient death whistle called out to Chrys (short for Chrysanthemum) as soon as she opened the locker. She felt the compulsion to blow the whistle, but thanks to the school bell, she got distracted. Chrys, Ellie, Rel, Dean, and Grace were detained after Dean and Chrys got into a fight. Dean was offended that the school had assigned Mason’s locker to the new girl, and he resorted to insulting her, resulting in an aggravated physical reaction from Chrys. Since Rel and Ellie tried to defend Chrys, their teacher, Mr. Craven detained them, and Grace joined the motley crowd because she was Dean’s girlfriend and was present at the scene. Chrys carried the ancient whistle with her to detention, and Dean teased her when he noticed it. Dean and pretty much the rest of the school were aware that Chrys had an addiction problem and that she’d been to rehab. And Dean constantly reminded her of the worst time of her life. When Mr. Craven analyzed the whistle, he decoded that the inscription on the whistle roughly translated to ‘summon the death.’ Mr. Craven decided to keep the whistle with him, since technically it was school property. He figured he might as well sell this ancient artifact, especially after he saw prices listed on a website dedicated to selling and buying antiques. Before confirming that the object he wanted to sell was in ‘good working condition,’ he had to test it, so Mr. Craven did what he obviously shouldn’t have; he blew the whistle. Soon after, he felt an eerie presence around him, and he stepped out to check out what was going on.

Meanwhile, Rel went back to the classroom to grab his comic book, and that was when he noticed the whistle on the table, and he also figured that Mr. Craven had planned to sell it and make a good profit out of the artifact. So, he decided to steal it (bad move!). Now, although Mr. Craven didn’t have the whistle, a ghostly figure followed him. The decaying figure with blood spilling from its mouth gutted Mr. Craven and quite literally grabbed his lungs, turning them into soot. Rel brought the whistle to the group study session at Grace’s house. Dean dared Grace to blow the whistle, and she accepted the challenge. The sound was deafening, and they were relieved when nothing really happened afterwards. But soon, almost everyone who’d heard the sound of the whistle started to have eerie experiences, and when they discovered that Mr. Craven was dead, they figured the whistle was cursed. Chrys decided to return the whistle to Mason’s family, and Ellie accompanied her. The house was full of antiques and paintings, suggesting that the whistle was likely a part of this elaborate collection. Chrys and Ellie met Mason’s grandmother there; as it turned out, the house no longer belonged to her—the bank had foreclosed on it. She was counting her days, hoping to drop dead soon. She cherished her antiques (that mostly were related to death) and explained how she’d traveled the world collecting them. When Chrys showed her the whistle and stated that she’d found it in her locker that once belonged to Mason, she stated that Chrys was wrong to assume that she found the whistle, because in reality the whistle ‘found her,’ just like it did her grandson. She’d come across the whistle in Guatemala, and she blamed it for her daughter and grandson’s deaths.

The object was called ‘In Choka’ or ‘The Cry’; it was a stolen treasure from a plundered tribe. When Chrys mentioned that the inscription meant ‘to summon death,’ the old woman corrected her. She explained that it actually summons one’s own death. So, the moment Grace blew the whistle, everyone who’d heard the sound had basically called upon their death. The moment someone is born, death becomes inevitable, and according to the old woman, the whistle accelerates the process. One’s lifetime is pretty much the time that Death takes to find their prey, but the sound of the whistle helps guide Death to the individual even before they are meant to die. For example, Mr. Craven was destined to die 10-15 years later due to lung cancer, but the minute he blew the whistle, Death found him sooner, and the bald, sick, bleeding man who’d been haunting him was his older self. Bottom line, Dean, Grace, Ellie, Chrys, and Rel will die within a couple of days, so will they just accept the inevitable or find a way out of this strange situation?

What happened to Dean, Rel and Grace?

Chrys and Ellie decided to investigate Mason’s death, and from the coroner’s report, they deduced that the old woman was right. The report stated that the dental condition of the individual suggested he was in his late 40s, whereas Mason was only 17 when he died. Evidently, he was destined to burn to death in a gas leak, and since he had heard the whistle scream, Death came to him sooner, and he was turned into the 40-year-old version of himself who was meant to die in a fire. Chrys and Ellie decided to warn the rest of the group, who were busy attending the harvest festival. But they were a little too late. Grace’s aged version found her, and by the time Dean tracked her down inside the maze, she was already dead. Grace was supposed to die of old age, and because of the whistle, she was turned into a wrinkly old lady. Ellie and Chrys discussed their findings with Dean and Rel. Dean wasn’t ready to accept that Grace was gone. The old woman they’d found wasn’t anything like his girlfriend, except she was found wearing the exact same clothes as Grace. He thought their theory was too extreme, and he walked away but, unfortunately, Dean ultimately died a tragic death. He died in a car accident, and although he stayed locked up in his room hoping Death wouldn’t find him, he ultimately died exactly how he was supposed to. His fingers fractured, his legs twisted, wounds inflicted by shards of glass covered his body, his right arm split into two, his rib cage popped out of his chest, and his skull was almost crushed. Dean had to endure the immense pain before he collapsed to death. Chrys and Ellie spoke to the old woman, asking if there was any way to escape from this impossible trap. She didn’t think one could stop Death, and the only way to escape it was by offering it someone else’s life. All they had to do was mark someone else with their blood and offer the ‘In Choka’ a new sacrifice. The fact the old woman survived even after coming across the ancient object suggested that she’d resorted to the same trick to escape Death, and perhaps that was all the more reason why she carried immense guilt.

Chrys and Ellie refused to let someone else die just so they could live, but Rel didn’t really care. He was desperate, and he already had someone in mind who he believed deserved to be sacrificed. The youth pastor, Noah Haggerty, was a local drug dealer, and instead of using his influence to guide young people to the right path, he offered them an easy escape. Rel managed to break into the church when Noah was alone and held him at gunpoint to take him captive. Noah managed to overpower Rel, but when he tried to pull the trigger, it didn’t work. Rel knew that he was meant to die in an accident at the steel mill, so there was no way a bullet would kill him. Rel struck him with a metal tray and carried him to the mill, where he held him captive. He was ready to mark Noah with his blood when Chrys and Ellie arrived. They tried to stop him, but Rel didn’t think it was fair that they had to die whereas someone like Noah would get to live. Rel was ready to mark Noah as his blood, but he just couldn’t do it. And within minutes, his arm was ripped off, and blood oozed out of it. Chrys and Ellie tried to hold back Rel from being consumed by Death, but they couldn’t. His body ruptured, and all that was left was blood and flesh.

Did Chrys and Ellie manage to cheat Death?

Chrys and Ellie realized that they didn’t have much time left; Death would soon find them. They couldn’t afford to grieve, and they immediately focused on saving their lives. Before his brutal death, Rel had stated that ‘everyone had to only die once,’ and the phrase stayed with Chrys. She figured there was another way to cheat Death. If she could stop her heart for a few seconds, then maybe Death wouldn’t target her or Ellie anymore. Chrys had fallen in love with Ellie, and it had been quite some time since she felt so happy and content in her life. She wasn’t ready to let it all go, and she was prepared to risk everything just to be with her lover. Chrys was supposed to die young due to drug overdose, something she’d dreaded all her life. Her father had died while driving her to rehab, and she had blamed herself for his demise every single day. She wanted to be better, and with Ellie, she felt hopeful about her future. Ellie had been interning at a local hospital, and according to her future version, she eventually became a doctor and one day died of a seizure. So, Ellie used her medical knowledge to slow down Chrys’ heartbeat so that she would be technically dead. She then planned on injecting her with glucagon and finally using a defibrillator to bring her back to life. But the plan didn’t quite work out. The defibrillator had run out of charge, and even though she’d used it once, Chrys didn’t respond. Death had gotten hold of her and refused to let her go. To make matters worse, Noah managed to free himself, and he’d gotten hold of Rel’s gun and was ready to get rid of the ‘evil.’ He figured that whatever was going on was the work of the devil, and as someone ‘marked by God,’ it was his duty to cleanse the world of this taint. So, while Ellie was trying her best to revive Chrys, Noah started to fire at random.

During Whistle’s ending, Ellie repeatedly called out to Chrys, begging her to come back, and quite dramatically, it was Chrys’ love for Ellie that revived her. She was reminded of the beautiful moments she’d shared with Ellie, and she wanted to live just to be by her side. She defeated Death, and when she woke up, she saw Ellie suffering a seizure. She had been shot in the waist, and clearly Death had almost gotten to her. Just as Chrys tried to focus on saving Ellie, Noah walked in with a gun in his hand. He was determined to kill Chrys and Ellie, and he was under the assumption that he was invincible. He touched Ellie’s blood with his fingers, possibly to establish that he couldn’t be harmed, not realizing that he’d marked himself with the curse and it was now passed onto him. Immediately, the seizure subsided, and Ellie regained consciousness. Noah’s dead version approached him, and as soon as he shot at this ghostly figure, the bullets started to pierce his body as well. He was basically shooting at himself, so naturally, it had a direct impact on his mortal form. Death finally got to him; he wasn’t marked by God, after all!

What does the credit scene suggest?

Ellie and Chrys survived the nightmare; they successfully cheated Death, and three months later, they were back in school together as a couple. Chrys was visibly doing well, and she was her happiest with Ellie by her side. Ellie had gotten her first tattoo to symbolize her overcoming death. So, did the curse end? As the old woman had stated, they couldn’t really destroy the ancient artifact. When a student opened her locker, she found the oval object sitting there, with a mysterious-looking whistle inside. During the end credit scene, Asha Nelson, the girl who’d found the whistle, was called on stage to play the school anthem on her violin. She confidently got on stage, and before she played the violin, she blew the whistle, and everyone in the auditorium, including Chrys and Ellie, heard the harsh shriek. Chrys and Ellie had tried to stop the freshman, but it was already too late. The ending suggests that the curse was far from over. Everyone in the room would now face Death, and it was almost impossible for Chrys and Ellie to save them. If those in the room discovered that the only way to escape Death was by marking someone else, then it would result in complete chaos. People would be targeted at random, and the town would soon be labelled as ‘cursed.’ Chrys and Ellie had managed to fool Death once, but can they do it again? Not only was it physically exhausting, it was also emotionally draining! Maybe we’ll get to find out what happened to them in a sequel where hopefully someone will discover how to destroy this cursed object altogether! Or perhaps Chrys and Ellie would eventually accept that they couldn’t run away from Death all their lives and ultimately submit to it. Hopefully they’ll put up a fight for the sake of love.
