Netflix’s Made In Korea Movie Cast And Characters Guide
10 hours ago
The growing craze of Korean pop culture has taken Indian youth by storm for quite a while, a phenomenon that has resulted in the creation of R. Karthik’s “Made in Korea,” which is a collaboration between the two countries. The Tamil-South Korean movie is light on the cerebral side and full of heart. The narrative follows Shenbagam’s journey as she chases her dreams of visiting Korea, learns the ways of the world with the help of some kind souls, and becomes self-dependent by growing all the wiser by the end. Despite being marred with a number of contrivances, “Made in Korea” proves to be a decent watch due to its adherence to simplicity. The ensemble cast has both Indian and South Korean actors, all of them delivering a commendable performance together, which helps a frail plotline to stick.
Shenbagam, Played By Priyanka MohanSouth Indian actor Priyanka Mohan started her acting journey with the Kannada movie “Ondh Kathe Hella” and since then has starred in Tamil movies like “Doctor” and “Captain Miller” and the Telugu movie “Gang Leader,” to name a few. The majority of her roles didn’t utilize her acting potential by limiting her as either a love interest of the lead or by underwriting her characters entirely. Thankfully, that changed for good in “Made in Korea,” as she plays the lead role of Shenbagam aka Shenba with the right amount of gusto and poise. Shenba begins her journey as a starry-eyed girl driven by her dream of visiting Korea. Although the initial source of her motivation, the history of the Indian Ayuta kingdom princess, Sembavalam, who became a queen in Korea, adds a new twist to the narrative. By her own admission, before her marriage, Shenba never had to think of her future and never felt the need to become financially independent. Needless to say, this is troubling, given the fact that Shenba belongs to a humble background and how gullible she initially turned out to be. As if that weren’t enough, she went against her father to marry a person who could barely survive on his own, let alone carry the burden of her dreams on top of that. Blindly putting her trust in her deceitful husband, Shenba found herself in deep waters as she needed to survive in a foreign land on her own and learned her lessons the hard way. Out of shame, Shenba couldn’t return to her father and thus took the first step on her journey of self-reliance.
Shenba’s connection with Yeon-ok makes the emotional core of the movie; by setting the old woman free from her shackles and helping her to manifest her dreams, Shenba truly understood how crucial it is to prioritize the right things in her life. At the same time, in her pursuit of becoming self-dependent, Shenba never lost touch of her kind self. Despite working tirelessly to save up enough to repay her father, she ended up giving the money to her friends to help them achieve their dreams—especially because she knows how kindness can bridge the gap between dreams and reality.
Yeon-ok, played by Park Hye-jinVeteran South Korean actor Park Hye-jin received global attention thanks to her portrayal of Cho Sang-woo’s mother in “Squid Game.” Aside from that, she has also acted in several TV series, namely “Pachinko” and “Flower of Evil,” and in acclaimed movies, “Silenced,” “Chaw,” etc. In “Made in Korea,” she plays the role of Yeon-ok, an elderly woman who has to pretend to be bedridden to avoid the burdens her selfish children and their family pile up on her. A loving, kind soul, Yeon-ok belongs to a generation that suppressed the individual identity of a woman, limiting her role as sister, mother, and wife to make her the trampled foundation of others’ success. It is truly unfortunate how even at the late phase of her life, Yeon-ok couldn’t taste freedom until Shenba came to her life, as her own son never bothered to consider her dreams. Yeon-ok’s disappointment regarding her children is shown when she gets dismayed upon learning Shenba will be giving away her hard-earned money to her friends instead of following her goal to pay her father back. However, upon learning Shenba’s actions were guided by her compassion, Yeon-ok appreciated her decision. Learning about Yeon-ok’s lifelong struggles allowed Shenba to prioritize being financially independent and brought about a significant growth in her character. It would have been great if Yeon-ok could leave her family and move away with Shenba, who by all means has proven herself to be the daughter Yeon-ok never had.
Mani, Played By RishikanthTamil actor Rishikanth has previously acted in “Irumbu Thirai,” “K-13,” Rajknikanth’s “Coolie,” and “Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal,” to name a few. In the movie, he plays the role of Shenba’s husband Mani, who tricked and abandoned her. It can be argued that Mani’s financial condition was in shambles and he didn’t want the marriage in the first place, knowing he couldn’t afford bearing the responsibilities of his better half. However, acts like breaking Shenba’s trust and escaping by taking the money Shenba’s father had arranged for her definitely portray the picture of a crooked person who deserves no sympathy. By the end of the movie, after Shenba choosing not to lodge a case against him despite having all the reasons to do so, Mani goes through a change of heart and tries to make amends by returning the money and helping her parents in her absence. But as the saying goes, too little, too late. No matter what Mani does to make up for his past actions, he doesn’t deserve Shenba’s forgiveness.
Miscellaneous CharactersAside from the main characters, “Made in Korea” features a talented cast of supporting actors who performed greatly with the roles they were given. Si Hun-baek played the role of Heo Jun-jae, Shenba’s kind friend who helped her by going beyond his capabilities. Ha-Ram Jo played the role of Shenba’s K-Pop band member, Sung-hun.
