'Furies' Season 2 Ending Explained: Will There Be A Season 3?
Furies is one of the most frustrating TV shows I’ve ever watched. Not only is it as Netflix-y as it can get, but the story is also ridiculously shallow despite trying to give you the most twisted plotlines possible. Most of it doesn’t really make sense, but if we leave aside that fact, at least it’s nice to see a woman-led action TV show, I guess. The genuinely annoying part is that the first season was so flawed; I’m sure the creators had a lot to look back at and work on, but instead, it continues the saga of bad decisions and useless twists that don’t do anything for this story. The last thing we saw at the end of the first season was that Selma killed Driss, but her biological mother is still alive and on the run. On the other hand, the Damocles took over the Paris underworld, leaving the Fury with no real position anymore. What follows is Selma and Lyna trying to find a new life for themselves, but in different ways. Who succeeds, and will they forever remain stuck in this race against the world? Man, I just need it to end. Anyway, let’s find out in this exploration of the ending of season 2.
Spoiler Alert
How Does Selma Establish Herself As The Queen Of Paris’ Underworld?Selma pretty much turns her back on everything she said about what the Furies represent: order and harmony and all the rest. Turns out, just like everyone else, the one thing motivating her is power. She doesn’t want to just bring back the Olympus by getting rid of the Damocles; she wants there to be only one seat at the table, and she’s going to be the one in it. She would’ve liked to do it with Lyna by her side, serving her as her new Fury, but her niece dashed that chance when she decided to take Oz to the cops instead of just letting Selma kill him. She’s got a new young, angry, ambitious female sidekick now, and this one’s even blonde: Rosie, the Carny’s daughter.
After Selma uses Iris, the dirty cop, to have Oz eliminated, she decides to use his own techniques to turn the Carny’s grand coalition against him. Oz had kidnapped all the kids of the gang leaders in the Carny’s coalition, which was why they toed the line and didn’t really act against Damocles that much. So, she sent Simon to get the kids out, and Niko just happened to be there as well, ready to help. It wasn’t a favor, though; these kids are now collateral that she holds, enough to put her on the throne as Paris’ underworld queen. As a last touch, she plays a recording of the Carny disrespecting his daughter to get Rosie to finally kill the old man. She has everyone’s obedience, but not necessarily their loyalty, given that it’s only by threatening their families that she’s managed to recruit all the gang leaders to her side. Rosie’s the exception, though, because by actually trusting the girl with responsibilities and letting her feel important, she’s given her all she ever wanted. With her advancing Parkinson’s, Selma might have trouble keeping the Paris underworld obedient, even though she’s found Varda’s stash of anti-Parkinson’s medication. By recruiting Rosie as her new pseudo-Fury and keeping Varda alive to buy his loyalty, Selma is building a new cadre of lieutenants who will keep this grand machine running.
Who Rescues Lyna In The End?After Lyna turns down Selma’s offer to rule Paris by her side, all the gang bosses are ordered to leave the room, and the two engage in an extended battle that ultimately ends with Selma getting the better of Lyna and shooting her in the leg. It’s not clear where she sends her off to at this point, but she’s put in a car with two of her goons, and they drive off into the countryside. But before they can get to their destination, a speedy car drives by them and pulls the same maneuver Lyna pulled on the armored van that was carrying the Carny’s cousin. The next thing Lyna knows, she’s crawling out of the wreck of the car, and a lone gunman walks up and finishes off Selma’s men. Silhouetted against the sun, Lyna sees that she’s been rescued by Orso, whose life she’d spared earlier in the season (not even going into all the other history they share) when she rescued Leon from him. But the real surprise is the identity of the woman with him; it turns out Oz really was lying when he tried to claim Selma killed Lyna’s biological mom. Finally, all these years later, mother and daughter are reunited, though they’ll have to work together to figure out how to survive Selma’s onslaught. Honestly, we thought the whole plot of this season was literally going to just be about this.
Do Simon And Niko End The Season As Enemies?Simon “The Fixer” and Niko “Mud Man” have been thick as thieves since the beginning of the show, but Lyna’s plan to surrender Oz to the cops so they can get pardons is what ends up tearing them apart. Niko finds out Lyna’s working with Elie early, but he understands her motives. When Simon finds out from Niko later, he kind of understands, too, but he knows Selma’s so deadly they don’t stand a chance if they go behind her back. This happens in the middle of the first failed attempt on Oz’s life at the airfield, when it turns out Oz was never there at all. Given his concerns, he’s immediately more apprehensive, so he ends up telling Selma about Lyna’s plan, even though Niko begged him not to. This leaves Niko with no choice but to turn his back on Simon, Selma, and the grand coalition, because he truly believes what Lyna’s offering with the pardon—a chance at a normal life—is worth the risk. Ultimately, Niko and Simon do end up working together to liberate all the kids from Damocles’ prison, but after that, Niko has to go on the run again. For the brief while when the pardon has come through, it looks like there might be a chance old differences can be forgiven, but then Selma kills Oz anyway, and everything falls apart.
When Simon tries to stop Selma from taking the kids hostage again, she shoots him in the gut, and he limps off to the others. Though he tells them where the kids are, by the time Niko gets to the warehouse to free the kids, Selma’s already moved them. This leaves them with no bargaining power at all, and in his efforts to save Simon’s life when Niko’s doctor can’t do the job, he takes the man to a hospital, even though the one thing Simon knew was that he would rather die than go to prison. In a way, this is the ultimate betrayal, and it came as an act of love, consigning Simon to police captivity rather than letting him die under the stars like he wanted.
Who Is Going To Keep Leon Safe? The one thing that made Leon a high-value commodity throughout season 2 was the fact that he was the only person who could ID Oz, the leader of the Damocles. And traumatized as he was by Oz’s murder of his mother, Leon is ready to do what it takes to bring Oz down, even if it means inserting himself into situations where he’s putting his life in danger. When he’s kidnapped by Orso, who works for Varda, Oz’s right-hand man, Lyna does what it takes to rescue the kid, but while they’re getting out, Leon finally recognizes Oz, and he and Lyna have a fight, following which Lyna finally gets the better of him. Selma trained her well, after all.
Oz is now dead, meaning Leon should have no real value to the criminal world anymore, except the Parisian underworld isn’t so easily forgiving, he’s likely returning for a more fleshed-out situation in season 3. For one thing, Selma spent half the season frustrated that Lyna wouldn’t just use truth serum to interrogate the child, just because she’d grown too “attached” to the boy. Now that Lyna’s on the run, Leon’s a potential weak point she can exploit, just like the Carny tried to exploit Lyna by threatening to have Rosie smash her head in with a hammer in the middle of negotiations with Selma. Lucky for Leon, though, he’s got two very capable fugitives by his side to protect him. There’s Niko, of course, who proved how much of a heart of gold he had when he went out of his way to rescue the kids in Damocles’ prison. And then there’s Elie, Lyna’s ex, and now also (presumably) an ex-cop. His coworker friend with benefits, Iris, framed him for helping Selma kill Oz, so now his boss, Commissioner Tossar, believes he’s a dirty cop and even tried to shoot him. He got away, though, and now he’s going to keep an eye on Leon, for Lyna’s sake, if nothing else. Also, Lyna’s mum, Amytis, is going to be around to look after Leon, a familiar face he can trust, so let’s hope nothing happens to her when Selma comes gunning for the boy.
Will There Be a Season 3?In Furies season 2’s ending, there’s a point where Rosie tells Lyna that neither she nor Selma feels like they can kill her. After this, we get a small glimpse of Lyna’s dead father, Driss, indicating that Lyna would end up wrongfully imprisoned like him. Honestly, for a second, it made me wonder if he was still alive. Selma did shoot him in the chest, but the way this show throws twists at us, it suddenly had me thinking, what if both Lyna’s parents were actually alive? But we did see Selma kill her brother, and the second season began with her explaining to Lyna that if she hadn’t done so, Lyna would’ve blamed herself for killing her father for the rest of her life. Either way, you can’t even say the show ends on a cliffhanger; it literally ends on the beginning of a new chapter. One in which Kahina and Lyna will be reunited and working together against Selma. From the start of the show, I’ve been feeling like Selma is the ultimate enemy here; she’s been the big villain all along, so I guess if we do get that 3rd season, it will hopefully be the last one, seeing Selma and the Parisian underworld go down together.
