Netflix’s Radioactive Emergency Cast And Characters Guide

Netflix’s Brazilian drama series, “Radioactive Emergency,” brings the nation’s old wounds to light as it tries to examine the truth behind the harrowing tragedy of the 1987 Goiania nuclear disaster. The narrative highlights the plight of the unfortunate victims who suffered for corporate and authoritarian negligence; the combined efforts of emergency caregivers and researchers to contain the disaster are rich with human drama and deft characterization. A strong performance delivered by an all-Brazilian cast, is essentially the backbone of the narrative, which brings out the emotional turmoil and psychological impact of the manmade tragedy.

Antonia Played by Ana Costa

Brazilian actor Ana Costa has previously acted in the TV series “Nobody’s Looking” and the thriller short “O Novo Corpo.” In “Radioactive Emergency,” she plays the role of Antonia, wife of scrap dealer Evenildo, who obtained the cesium-137 capsule from his sellers. Despite not having the educational background to learn what kind of threat an unstable radioactive container possesses, Antonia is smart enough to link its presence with the degrading physical health of her family members. Thanks to Antonia’s act of bravery of notifying the authorities about the capsule, the nuclear disaster didn’t take an even worse shape. A wise, braveheart Antonia is shown to be kind and selfless enough to even refuse her chance to get better treatment in a naval hospital to allow her brother-in-law, Joao, to be present with his young daughter, Celeste. The tragic demise of Celeste and Antonia acts as a grim reminder that irrespective of the root cause behind a man-made tragedy, the downtrodden ones always pay for the sins of the powerful. The character was inspired by Maria Gabriela, a real-life victim of the Goiania disaster.

Marcio Played By Johnny Massaro

Renowned Brazilian actor/director Johnny Massaro began his acting career with theater performances before making a strong mark in the telenovela scene by starring in “Malhacao,” “A Regra do Jogo,” “Terra e Paixao,” “Amorteamo,” etc. Some of Massaro’s notable silver screen appearances include “The Kitchen,” “The Shepherd and the Guerrilla,” “The First Soldiers,” etc. In “Radioactive Emergency,” he plays the role of young nuclear physicist Marcio, who is the first on-field expert to assess the gravity of the disaster whose quick-wittedness curbed the scale of the crisis. An expecting father, Marcio is caught between the conflict of prioritizing between his duties to the victims in need and responsibilities to his family. Marcio left his hometown, Goiania, by finding better career opportunities as a physicist, and despite his father’s repeated pleas, he didn’t feel that the neglected small town had much to offer to his future prospects. Still, when the push came to shove, Marcio didn’t abandon his people and, putting his own life at risk, tackled the disaster along with other members of the emergency committee. Marcio’s character represents the selfless commoners who championed the spirit of humanity through their actions, saving countless lives in the process.

Evenildo, Played By Bukassa Kabengele

Congolese-Brazilian actor Bukassa Kabengele has previously acted in movies like “Pacified” and “Carandiru” and the crime thriller series “Impure.” In the Netflix series, he playsEvenildo, the scrap collector who obtains the radioactive capsules and mistakenly ends up infecting his entire family by prying their protective casing open. Evenildo is a victim of circumstances; he didn’t have a modicum of an idea about the dangerous potential of the object in his possession and paid the ultimate price for his ignorance by losing his wife and niece in the radioactive infection. A grief-stricken Evenildo blames himself for the plight of his family members, despite knowing the reality that the system that preys on them is to be blamed for the tragedy. Evenildo’s character was inspired by real-life victim Devair Ferreira.

Dr. Beny Orenstein Played By Paulo Gorgulho

Brazilian actor Paulo Gorgulho gained recognition thanks to his performances in telenovelas “Pantanal” and “Estes Mulheres” and has also acted in movies like “The Killer” and “Ten Commandments,” to name a few. In the series, he plays Dr. Beny Orenstein, chief of the nation’s nuclear energy commission who unexpectedly finds himself in the critical position of handling a national crisis of nuclear disaster. A kind, honorable man who took accountability for the disaster without trying to cover up the failure of the system to detect an obvious danger, people like Orenstein are a rarity in real life. Driven by the sole motive of saving lives and containing the contamination, Orenstein navigated through the turbulent dynamics between politicians and the team of researchers and medics and kept the whole ordeal from falling apart.

Governor Roberto Played By Tuca Andrada.

Brazilian actor Tuca Andrada has previously acted in movies like “Wandering Heart,” “The Pickup Game,” “Chess Game,” etc. In the series, he plays the role of Goiás Governor Roberto, a self-serving, image-conscious politician who is more concerned about maintaining his reputation in media and public than taking adequate measures to tackle the crisis at hand. Like typical political leaders, Roberto is quick to put responsibilities on others and stay on the safe side to keep the impact of the tragedy’s fallout from reaching him.
