Miri Community Fiesta, Bubuk Festival set for Apr 17–18

MIRI (April 11): A wide range of exciting activities will take centre stage at the Miri Community Fiesta and Bubuk Festival 2026, scheduled to take place on Apr 17 and 18 at Batu Satu, Kuala Baram.

The event, jointly organised by the Miri City Council (MCC), Batu Satu Fishermen’s Association, the MCC Sustainable Development Goals Standing Committee and the Tourism and MCC Business Events Development Standing Committee.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the programme aims to draw participation from the local communities as well as visitors from within and outside the country.

He added that the event not only celebrates local heritage but also reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development, community well-being, and the implementation of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

According to Yii, the Miri Community Fiesta: SDG Sustainable Festival on Apr 17 will begin with a ‘gotong-royong’ (community clean-up) programme at Tamu Batu Satu through the ‘Clean & Win!’ initiative, promoting environmental responsibility in line with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Various programmes will be held at the Batu Satu Community Hall, including ‘Dunia Warna Si Cilik’, a ‘Protect & Care’ session with the police and a psychiatrist, as well as a Hari Raya booth decoration competition supporting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

In the evening, the ‘Malar Lestari’ Programme at the Batu Satu Multipurpose Hall will feature a ‘berlanggar meja’ gathering in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, along with ‘bermukun’ (singing and dancing accompanied by traditional Malay folk music).

The highlight on Apr 18 will be the ‘Bubuk (krill shrimps) Festival 2026’, held in conjunction with the fiesta, featuring activities such as the Bubuk Challenge, Bubuk Master Chef, a DIY composting workshop, health screenings, exhibitions, and traditional games including the Sepuk Challenge and arm wrestling.

Yii said the Bubuk Festival, which showcases the traditional harvesting of bubuk ― not only supports the local economy but also holds strong potential to boost sustainable tourism in Miri.

He added that MCC remains committed to positioning Miri as a green, smart, and most liveable international resort city, in line with SDG and PCDS 2030 aspirations.

“We hope the organisation of these events will attract more domestic and international tourists to Miri, a city known for its beauty, cleanliness, and cultural diversity,” said Yii.

The public is invited to attend the events, which also serves as a platform to strengthen community unity and sustainable development.
