'From' Season 4 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Sophia The Yellow Suit Man?
Episode 1 of From Season 4 picks up the plot right when Season 3 left off, with the Yellow Suit Man ripping Jim’s throat out while Julie (from a different timeline or iteration of the loop that the Township is stuck in) watches on. The Yellow Suit Man asks Julie “when” she has come from, which reestablishes the theory that Julie can in fact jump between different “chapters” of the story that’s being told in the Township, and that they keep running into one another every time Julie tries to alter the narrative. The Yellow Suit Man says that Julie’s mission is pointless because once a story has been told, it can’t be rewritten. While they are having this conversation, Julie just vanishes. No, we don’t see her running away into the woods or anything like that; she just vanishes. And that’s so surprising that even the Yellow Suit Man expresses confusion. Instead of pursuing Julie, the Yellow Suit Man turns to Jim and says that he’s upset that he won’t be around to see the next chapter of the story, which happens to be his favorite part. Why so? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Kenny Sees The Smiley CreatureDuring the closing moments of Season 3, Fatima was telling Ellis and Kenny that, while giving birth to her “baby” (which rapidly grew up to be Smiley right before Boyd’s eyes), she saw that the creatures had made some kinda deal with “It” in order to remain immortal, because of which they had sacrificed their children. Season 4 of From continues that conversation where Ellis is telling Fatima to elaborate on her vision, and she keeps repeating the same thing: the creatures made a bargain with “something” that was horrible. And it looks like the more she tries to remember this vision, the more she forgets about it. Kenny tells Ellis to take Fatima back to the cottage, but she doesn’t want to leave the cellar without Boyd. It’s only after Kenny assures her that he’ll bring back Boyd that she leaves. On that note, Kenny enters the tunnels underneath the Township and runs into Boyd. That’s when he also notices Smiley, who is putting on some fresh clothes and greeting Kenny with that signature grin on his face, which understandably shocks Kenny, because he had helped Boyd cremate that thing. Before Kenny can process what he’s looking at, Boyd drags him out of the tunnels and back into the cellar, and they shut the cellar door behind them so that the creatures can’t follow them, at least for the time being. When Boyd says that Smiley is the child that Fatima gave birth to, Kenny is rendered speechless.
Kristi Tends To ElginDonna brings Kristi to the Colony House to have a look at Elgin, who is in a bedroom upstairs. They come across Sara, who is still sitting there in her bloodied clothes after poking out Elgin’s eye. Sara points out that the residents of the Colony House are returning, and she says that she should leave, because if people find out what she has done to Elgin in order to get the information about Fatima’s location out of him, they might just lynch her. Once Donna signs off on that decision, Sara leaves, thereby further confusing Kristi. Well, once she sees Acosta standing guard in the bedroom, as well as the state of Elgin’s eye, Kristi understands what Sara did to him. She tells Donna to bring some ice, while she figures out how to stitch up his eye and also fix his broken knuckles (courtesy of Boyd). Elgin wonders if Kristi thinks he is a bad person for withholding information about where Fatima was being kept, but she seems to be more focused on ensuring that Elgin’s eye doesn’t get infected, and can’t really think about what compelled Elgin to get Fatima to give birth to Smiley. They are stuck in a time loop where creatures come out at night and people have weird visions; so, it’s quite understandable that Elgin got manipulated by the powers that are controlling this whole place. It’s tough to understand what’s real and what’s not. For now, it looks like Elgin’s injuries are quite real, and as a medical student, since it’s Kristi’s job to keep people healthy and safe, she is trying to process all of this through the lens of medicine.
Boyd Announces His Suicidal PlanKenny and Boyd return to the sheriff’s office, and while Kenny keeps asking him what they are supposed to do, Boyd focuses on arranging all the bullets that he has collected over the last few years. Why is he doing that? Because Boyd is now sure that there’s no way to defeat the creatures. Regardless of how many times they kill them, they’ll always find a way to come back into the Township and torment them. Hence, Boyd wants to make sure that there’s at least one bullet for every individual in the town, so that when the time comes, they can kill themselves. In Boyd’s opinion, that’s a better way to go out; and he’s right, because the creatures’ methods of killing are insanely torturous. Kenny understands where Boyd is coming from; he was made to watch Tian-Chen (Kenny’s mother) die slowly and painfully. Which is why Kenny gives Boyd a proper headcount: 47.
Well, it’s probably 46, because Kenny doesn’t know that Jim is dead (Jim is dead in this iteration of the loop, but in some other iteration of the loop, maybe he is alive). Anyway, when Boyd hears that number, he is shocked because, while that idea might’ve sounded “pragmatic” in his head, he doesn’t know how he can convince that many people to die by suicide. I don’t exactly blame Boyd for thinking that way; maybe that’s how I would have been acting if I saw one of the residents in my escapable town give birth to a baby, which then turns out to be the monster that I had once killed. And there’s no way that Boyd could convince the entire town to off themselves before the monsters got to them because, as soon as he made that suggestion, the townsfolk would have killed him under the assumption that he is on the side of the monsters.
Sophia And A Pastor Enter The TownshipTabitha reunites with Julie (the version that we have been following so far) and Ethan, and they all wonder where Jim is. Before they can clear up this confusion, a car comes hurtling into the Township and crashes into the sheriff’s office. There are two people in the car, a pastor and (seemingly) his daughter. The pastor is seemingly knocked out due to the impact, and while the girl is still conscious, she’s in great danger of having her throat slit by the metal pieces that are inches away from her neck. Tabitha rushes to the girl’s rescue, while Kenny and Boyd focus on getting the man out. Tabitha manages to open the door on the side of the passenger’s seat, and uses the Holy Bible (I’ll come back to this later) to keep the metal pieces from digging into the girl’s throat. Boyd and Kenny realize that that door on the driver’s seat can’t be opened normally; they need some tools to get the job done. So, Kenny goes to get some tools from the shed, and Boyd helps Tabitha extract the girl, Sophia, from the car. Once Sophia’s out, Tabitha takes her to the ambulance (Tabitha exchanges looks with Jade, but they don’t say anything to each other, yet) and Marielle gives her a sedative, because she is in extreme shock. Before the sedative is administered, Sophia does talk about how her father suffered a seizure before crashing, which means that that the crash didn’t knock him out; the crash occurred because he lost consciousness. Kenny returns with the tools and, with some help from Randall, the pastor is finally pulled out of the car and then taken to the clinic. When Marielle shares the info about the pastor’s seizure with Boyd, they remember that Elgin, Ethan, and Sara had seizures too, which might mean something or nothing at all. Still, Kenny says that he’ll spend the night with the patients and suggest Boyd have a chat with Ellis and Fatima.
Nobody Knows Where Jim IsJade catches up with Tabitha as she is taking the kids home. Tabitha tells the kids to go inside, because they won’t be able to process the fact that Tabitha used to be Miranda and Jade used to be Christopher, and that’s why they are soulmates and whatnot. Once Ethan and Julie are out of earshot, Jade tells Tabitha that they need to share their revelations with somebody. Tabitha says that nobody’s going to buy into this theory that she and Jade are lovers who are destined to be reincarnated in every cycle of the loop that the Township is stuck in so that they can save a bunch of kids who are already dead. They are going to believe that it’s another one of the tricks that the controller of this Township is playing on Jade and Tabitha’s minds, so that they jeopardize their own lives as well as the lives of all the residents in there. So, Tabitha advises Jade to keep this detail on the down low for now, and she assures him that she’ll talk to Jim about this soulmate business once he returns home. Later on, Julie approaches Tabitha and asks her for the umpteenth time why Jim hasn’t returned.
Now, Tabitha really doesn’t know where Jim is, but the way she acts in this moment makes it seem like she knows that Jim is dead and she just doesn’t care. She has learned that Jade is her soulmate, so, why should she bother with Jim, right? And, yeah, Tabitha’s apathy annoys Julie (it annoyed me a lot too), and she starts screaming at her mother. Ethan is the one who tells them to stop arguing and he straight up asks Tabitha if Jim is dead. That brings Tabitha to the realization that, as a mother, even if she doesn’t have all the answers, she needs to pacify her kids. Hence, she assures her kids that Jim is in the RV or the shack, and that’s where he’s going to spend the night until the sun comes up again. Right when everyone has calmed down, things in their house start flying around. Why? Oh, I don’t know; maybe the controller of the Township has created a poltergeist and sent it to haunt Tabitha.
Boyd Tells Fatima What She Gave Birth ToBoyd gets to the Colony House and runs into Acosta. He tries to have a conversation with her, but after what Boyd did to Elgin, Acosta wants to stay away from him. Once Acosta leaves (and goes to the diner to get cleaned up), Boyd enters the house and asks Donna if he can stay the night there, which is something that Donna is fine with. But she does want some clarity on what they should do with Elgin, because if he was manipulated once, he could be manipulated multiple times. Boyd puts that topic on the backburner and takes Donna to the room that Fatima is in, along with Ellis and Kristi. Once everyone has settled down, he gives them a brief recap of the ending of From Season 3 episode 10. This is briefly interrupted by the sound of Victor and Henry pulling a bed into the former’s room, which is something that Donna tends to and then returns to Fatima and the rest. Yes, it sounds preposterous, but is it preposterous enough to shock everyone in that room? I don’t think so.
I mean, a bunch of creatures, who used to be people once, supposedly striking a deal with the devil so that they can avert death by rebirthing from the womb of all the women (who just so happen to be their nighttime meals as well) that are stuck in that Township sounds pretty plausible if you are stuck in that Township. Fatima’s reaction to the fact that she was turned into an incubation chamber for one of those creatures is quite realistic though, because the thought of giving birth to the very thing that’ll kill you and your friends is traumatizing. It’s so traumatizing that she wants to go and have a bath and wash off the disgust she’s experiencing. Once Fatima leaves, Boyd starts one of his nihilistic rants, which is shut down by Kristi, because she says that if people see him being so negative, they’ll start taking the easy way out (without using Boyd’s bullet collection). Ellis then pacifies Boyd, because he understands why his father is panicking.
Sophia Is The Yellow Suit ManAt the clinic, Kenny and Marielle are approached by Sophia because she wants to contact her mom. While Marielle heads out, Kenny gives Sophia a brief explainer of what life is like in this town. Sophia takes this information a little too well, and she asks Kenny to pray with her, because she believes that “God is everywhere.” Even though Kenny isn’t a believer, he obliges Sophia, because he thinks that it’s going to pacify her. In the ending of episode 1, when Kenny has fallen asleep, Sophia kills the pastor. And while doing so, she reveals that she isn’t the pastor’s daughter; she’s actually the Yellow Suit Man. Yeah, the Yellow Suit Man apparently saw or sensed the pastor entering the Township and transformed himself into Sophie, got into the pastor’s car, and then entered the town. Why? Because way too many people had gotten hints about the guy in the yellow suit. And even if they didn’t know about the Yellow Suit Man, if the townsfolk saw him striding into the town without any disguise, they would have freaked out and ruined whatever he’s planning to do next.
Which brings me to the Bible, the use of the pastor, and the Yellow Suit Man pretending to be a devout Christian girl; there’s a phrase in 2 Corinthians 11:14 which goes something like, it’s not surprising that Satan sometimes appears in the form of an angel. For what purpose? To take a more hands-on approach manipulating people (it’s possible that everyone who has suffered seizures in this town has been “touched” by the Yellow Suit Man in one way or the other). So, does that mean that the Yellow Suit Man is actually Satan and this is the “something” or the “It” that Fatima claims that the creatures have struck a deal with? Given how this is the fourth season, and there’s one more left to go, I don’t think the Yellow Suit Man is Satan himself. I feel that this is one of his minions and the Township is his pet project, which he is working on to either impress his master or become more powerful than the master. With every loop, the Yellow Suit Man probably gains more strength, and he personally shows up when the loop is about to come to an end or, as he says, “fall apart.” How will Boyd and his crew stop that from happening? When will they find out Sophia’s true identity? We’ve to wait till next week to get the answers to these questions.
