MALAYSIA-BORN actress Fish Liew, who established her career in Hong Kong, has done the country proud by winning the Best Actress award at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards last night.
The victory was secured through her performance in the film Someone Like Me, in which she played Ah Mui. She beat other nominees, including Ma Li (The Dumpling Queen), Natalie Hsu (My First of May), Fala Chen (Peg O' My Heart), and Zhang Ziyi (She’s Got No Name).
The film saw the Johor Bahru-born actress take on the challenging role of a character living with cerebral palsy.
This achievement marks another personal milestone in her acting career, following her 2022 win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the biopic Anita.
Prior to this, the 36-year-old Liew also clinched Best Actress honours at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards.
In a post on her Instagram account @fish331, Liew expressed her deep appreciation for the recognition and gratitude for the win.
"Thank you to the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild for presenting me with this award," she said.
The success proves Malaysian talent's ability to compete on the global stage, further solidifying Fish Liew's position as one of the rising stars among Asian actresses. - BERNAMA
