KUCHING, Apr 27: Sarawak was crowned the overall champion of the Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games Sarawak 2026 that was held in Bintulu from April 24 to 26.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, the Sarawak contingent secured 56 gold, 68 silver, and 52 bronze medals.

Throughout the tournament, Sarawak dominated most of the events contested, as out of eight, the host contingent won seven, namely in track and field, swimming, bocce, table tennis, bowling, badminton, and basketball, while the football event was won by Kedah.

Sarawak Minister for Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that this achievement not only reflects athletes’ excellence but also reinforces the message that persons with disabilities are capable of achieving high levels of performance once given a fair opportunity.

Furthermore, she emphasised that the development of persons with disabilities must be grounded in equality, justice, and inclusion—not merely symbolic—by ensuring real access to education, healthcare, sports, and community support so that they are not marginalised.

She added that inclusivity efforts must begin early through educational approaches such as ‘No One Left Behind’ and be further reinforced through health initiatives like ‘Healthy Athletes’, which offer screening and follow-up treatment for athletes. — DayakDaily
