KUCHING, April 29: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has received a RM51,000 cheque from the Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) to support the construction of the Nan Qiao Ji Gong Memorial – Pillars of Remembrance, a RM500,000 project located within the council’s garden compound.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng received the contribution from KCGCCI president Dato’ Tan Jit Kee, noting that it forms part of public fundraising efforts for the memorial, which is set to commence construction next month.
Wee said the memorial pillars, scheduled for completion this year, carry the theme “Crossing Mountains & Rivers, Weaving Shared Memories” and are designed to be more than just a visual landmark.
He explained that the project is intended to honour unsung heroes, educate future generations, and foster a deeper understanding of shared history between Sarawak, Malaysia, and China.
“The objective is to preserve a narrative worthy of sharing, to honour those who made significant contributions without seeking reward, and to instil the values of courage, resilience and unity in future generations,” he said at a press conference held prior to the cheque presentation at MBKS heqadquarters today.
He commended KCGCCI for its generous support, saying the contribution reflects a strong sense of responsibility towards history and the wider community.
“A city is not only measured by how modern it becomes, but also by how well it remembers its past.
“Let this memorial stand as a symbol of gratitude and a lasting reminder of the sacrifices that shaped our history,” he added.
The Nan Qiao Ji Gong Memorial is linked to the contributions of the Nanyang volunteer drivers and mechanics during the Second World War, who played a vital role in transporting essential military supplies along the Yunnan–Burma Road to China.
Also present were Sarawak Arts and Cultural Research Institute president Datuk David Teng Lung Chi and MBKS Deputy Mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
