'Devil May Cry' Season 3 Theories & Predictions: Will Lady Kill Demon Jester?
Devil May Cry Season 3 hasn’t been greenlit at the time of writing this article. But based on the open-ended nature of Season 2’s ending, and the fact that Netflix greenlit the second season very soon after the release of the first season (even though the fan reception was mixed), I have a feeling that the third season will get the thumbs up from the streaming platform soon. Creator Adi Shankar has a healthy relationship with Netflix. He has given them Castlevania, Guardians of Justice, Castlevania: Nocturne, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, and he’s seemingly working on an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed too. So, even if the viewership for Season 2 isn’t that great, Netflix should give Season 3 the go-ahead as a sign of appreciation for Shankar and his team’s love for the game. With that in mind, allow me to share some of my theories and expectations from a potential third season of Devil May Cry.
Spoiler Alert
Lady Will Not Kill JesterI suppose fans of the games already knew about this plot twist, but for those whose only exposure to Devil May Cry is through this animated show, it must have been shocking. There’s a lot of ground to cover when it comes to Arkham’s transformation into Jester. We all know what happened up to the point Arkham got consumed by the fire, right after killing and eating Kalina. But how did he go from getting burned in that fire to turning into Jester and then becoming a double agent for Arius in Mundus’ court? How’s he able to travel between Makai and Earth without any portal-opening devices? Moreover, what’s he going to do now that Arius is dead? Does he really want to reunite with his daughter, Lady, or is he just tormenting her? Well whatever the case may be, I think we can expect to witness a major showdown between father and daughter. It won’t be a stretch to say that Lady is gonna find and kill her father. But, based on everything we have watched so far, we know that revenge won’t be that easy. I’m sure Jester is going to play some tricks on Lady’s mind and make her sympathize with his plight. Who knows? Maybe Lady will even forgive Jester for his transgressions. However, if Jester chooses to take advantage of Lady’s forgiveness, then she won’t hesitate to kill him.
Mundus Will Defeat VergilThe ending of Season 2 teased a major showdown between Vergil and Mundus. But given how we saw Vergil struggling to one-up a semi-powered Argosax, I don’t think his chances of defeating Mundus on the first try are very high. I have a feeling that Season 3 will begin with Vergil getting his butt handed to him by Mundus, which is gonna prompt him to go into exile. He has a lot of friends in Makai; the Makaians who he has freed from those jails built by Darkcom/Uroboros Corporation. Maybe they’ll provide him shelter and support after his loss. Will it really be that surprising for Vergil if he loses to Mundus? I don’t think so. He is aware of the fact that he still needs to shed a lot of his “sapien” aspects and become truly Makaian in order to take on Mundus. He is sure that he doesn’t want to serve Mundus. He has stated that he’ll rule over Makai and eventually invade Earth. There’s a long road between that statement and his goal. Hence, I expect Vergil’s journey in Season 3 to be quite meditative. He hit the ground running in Season 2. So, it’ll be nice to contrast that with something relatively slow-paced and yet grueling. Once he has upped his power level, we’ll get a rematch between him and Mundus; and he’ll get to avenge his mother, Eva.
Dante Will Try To Go To MakaiDante hit rock bottom in the ending of Season 2. He lost his brother again, and he has no way to reopen the rift and go to Makai. Well, he has the amulet, but without Sparda’s sword, that’s probably useless. Lady has left him to confront her father. The only “friend” that he has on Earth is Mattie, Lucan’s granddaughter. Given how Mattie has lost everything too, maybe Dante will forge a bond with her, and both of them will embark on a journey of self-healing. Dante’s main purpose is to reunite with Vergil. So, maybe in Season 3, we’ll see him find ways to open the rift between Earth and Makai. If he thinks that he needs to give Vergil some space, it’s possible that he’ll go looking for Lady, before she ends up killing herself by taking on Jester. If Dante isn’t interested in all that, I guess he’ll start working on his Devil Trigger. His inability to change into his demon form has been a major issue in Seasons 1 and 2. If this issue persists in Season 3, then it’s gonna feel repetitive. We know that Lucan had superpowers. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that Mattie has some powers too, and maybe she’ll be able to hone them by training with Dante. Much like Dante and Vergil, Mattie has seen death and destruction at a very young age. Hence, Dante will be able to teach Mattie to navigate through these tough times without succumbing to the darkness within.
A Power Vacuum On EarthPresident Hopper, Vice President Baines, and Darkcom/Uroboros CEO Arius are all dead. Martial law is in effect in the United States of America. For now, the country is being governed by the army, but I am sure someone’s gonna try and fill this power vacuum caused by Hopper, Baines, and Arius’ absence. Who will it be? I have no clue. Dante doesn’t really have any leadership qualities. Lady is dealing with her personal issues. What about Tom? The guy who was helping Lady during the final hours of Season 2? I think he has it in him. He has been at the eye of the storm and lived to tell the tale. He has seen how nationalism and religion can be weaponized to misguide the masses. He has rejected military propaganda to help those who can actually save the planet. He isn’t as inexperienced as he looks. So, maybe he’s gonna sit in the Oval Office and call the shots. If he doesn’t, lawlessness is going to increase in the country, and it’ll become the Wild West all over again. Well, this time it’s gonna be worse, because some gangsters and criminals might have access to Darkcom’s futuristic weapons and they might be looking to do some serious damage to keep the country under their thumb. If Tom intends to grab onto the reins of the country and steer it in the correct direction, he’ll need to act quickly and prepare the world for future demonic invasions.
Some Sparda CrumbsSeason 1 had very little information about Sparda. Season 2 had some solid scenes featuring Sparda. I want Season 3 to go all in on Sparda. Come on, now. How long is Devil May Cry gonna keep giving us these Sparda crumbs? I think the show has done a good enough job of establishing these contradictory opinions on Sparda. It’s about time we get the objective version from the perspective of Sparda himself; especially the part where he left his wife and sons. I mean, what was that about? Was it like a Nolan Grayson situation, where he just got bored of living like a civilian and flew off to some other realm to be with somebody who could keep up with him? Was he compelled by some villain to leave Eva, Dante, and Vergil? Does he really not want to avenge Eva by killing Mundus? Like, what’s up with this guy? By the way, yes, I am pretty sure that Sparda is alive. The golden rule of TV and movies is that, until and unless you have seen a dead body, you can’t assume that that character is dead. Have we seen Sparda’s dead body? No. Hence, he’s most definitely alive, and I think we are going to see a full-blown Sparda family reunion in Season 3. I have a feeling that it won’t be a happy one, and Dante and Vergil are in for a rude awakening. Well, those are just my theories and expectations from Season 3 of Devil May Cry.
