M’sian Confused By Students Using PTPTN To Support Families, Despite Coming From B40 Herself | WeirdKaya
A Malaysian student from a B40 family recently sparked discussion online after admitting that she found it difficult to understand why some students use their PTPTN education loans to support their families instead of themselves.

According to mStar, the woman shared that despite growing up in a low-income household, her parents never once asked her to hand over her PTPTN money to help with family expenses.

Father still gives her monthly allowance

According to her, her father works as a lorry driver while her mother is a housewife, and their family also receives government aid.

Even so, she said her father would still make sure to give her at least RM50 every month for pocket money despite their financial struggles.

She said she did not really understand students who use their PTPTN money to support their households, despite also coming from a poor family herself.

According to her, her parents receive government aid, her mother is a housewife, and she has many siblings who are still in school

Worked part-time after SPM

The student added that she, like many other children from B40 families, started working part-time after completing her SPM examinations.

She explained that she paid for her own laptop and university-related expenses using money she earned herself instead of relying on her parents.

She added that after completing SPM, she stopped relying on her parents for the things she wanted and paid for her own laptop and study fees using money she earned herself.

Netizens say helping family is a form of compassion

Her post later attracted mixed reactions online, with many Malaysians sharing their own experiences of helping their families financially while studying in university.

Some netizens said that while it may not necessarily be a child’s responsibility to support the household, many students choose to do so out of compassion and empathy towards their parents’ struggles.

Others also pointed out that many students from struggling families often feel a sense of responsibility to ease the burden at home, especially when their parents are already sacrificing a lot to support their education.
