Netflix’s The Wonderfools K-Drama Cast And Characters Guide
3 days ago
Netflix’s delightful superhero comedy series, “Wonderfools,” shows through example how genre conventions can be utilized to create remarkable, soulful stories. Aside from an engaging plotline which keeps viewers hooked throughout the eight episodes, characterization plays a major role as the ensemble of misfit goofballs make superhero fiction feel fun again. The series goes to great lengths to make the key figures appear as rounded characters without letting emotional flair or comedic elements completely take over, and thanks to that, a perfect balance between light-hearted banter and grim-dark undertone is maintained.
Eun Chae-ni Played By Park Eun-binRenowned South Korean actor Park Eun-bin has gained global recognition thanks to her prominence on the small screen scene. Throughout her three-decade-spanning acting career, Eun-bin has acted in series like “The King’s Affection,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Hyper Knife,” “Do You Like Brahms?” etc. Some of her silver screen appearances include “Memories,” “Road to Boston,” and “Secretly, Greatly,” to name a few. In “Wonderfools,” Eun-bin plays the role of Eun Chae-ni, a mischievous young girl whose physical afflictions haven’t been able to suppress her indomitable spirit. Having spent all of her life in her hometown, Haeseong, she dreams of experiencing the wonders of the world and to find a sense of freedom away from her restrained existence in her hometown. Chae-ni’s carefree, bumbling personality hides her true caring, empathetic, and kind nature, as it is shown how, time and again, she risks her life not only for the ones close to her, but for all the people of her hometown. Chae-ni might not have the wits or tact to become a hero, but her courage and heart truly make her one. One of the defining features of Chae-ni’s character is her belief in others, having known what it feels like to be called a failure or a trainwreck, Chae-ni always stands by those who have been abandoned by others. Chae-ni shows a deeper understanding of people than she lets on, which conveys she is more mature than others believe her to be. Even without considering her abilities as a Child of Eternity, she is special because of who she is as a person. Chae-ni’s charming, innocent demeanor offers a great contrast to Un-jeong’s more serious, somber personality, and makes their chemistry work well.
Lee Un-jeong Played By Cha Eun-wooSouth Korean actor Cha Eun-woo has found acclaim with his small screen performances in “Gangnam Beauty,” “Rookie Historian Goo Jae-ryung,” “A Good Day To Be a Dog,” etc. He has also starred in movies such as “My Brilliant Life,” “The First Ride,” etc. In “Wonderfools,” Eun-woo plays the role of Lee Un-jeong, one of the test subjects in Won-do’s Project Wunderkinder, who gained the power of telekinesis. Having been subjected to various torments at an early age after being separated from his mother, Un-jeong’s childhood was ruined by monsters like Won-do. The lingering effect of this tragic past, coupled with the guilt of causing the devastation in the orphanage, meant Un-jeong grew up to become a reserved, emotionally unavailable person whose lifelong loneliness is a testament to his misery. Struggling to trust the people around him, Un-jeong craved a chance to reunite with his birth parents to find a sense of belonging, which is the reason as to why he betrayed Chae-ni after learning her truth. In Un-jeong’s get-up, and his attempt to mingle with common people, there is an unmistakable Clark Kent vibe, even though their characteristics don’t really match.
Son Gyeong-hoon Played By Choi Dae-hoonActor Choi Dae-hoon has gained popularity on the small screen scene with his performances in series like “Beyond Evil,” “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” “Heart Surgeons,” etc. With an acting career rooted in years of theater work, Dae-hoon has delivered notable performances in silver screen projects like “Forbidden Floor,” “The Terror Live,” “The Lucid Dream,” “Decision to Leave,” etc. In “The Wonderfools,” Dae-hoon plays the role of Son Gyeong-hoon, Chae-ni’s friend, a middle aged man going through a rough patch in his marital life as his clumsiness has made him an eyesore to his family. An otherwise cowardly, indecisive person who acts non-confrontational to stay on the safe side, there is a hidden reserve of bravery in Gyeong-hoon’s character which comes to surface when it matters the most. His struggle to overcome his insecurities, in an effort to become the father his daughter Cheong can be proud of, makes Gyeong-hoon quite a sympathetic figure.
Kang Ro-bin Played By Im Seong-jaeIm Seong-jae has previously acted in movies like “Sunset in My Hometown,” “The Book of Fish,” “Hunt,” “Target,” “Bogota: City of the Lost,” etc. In “Wonderfools,” he plays the role of Kang Ro-bin, Chae-ni’s best friend and an absolute lovable goofball who is constantly undermined by everyone for being somewhat slow. Ro-bin in innocent and gullible to a fault, and has internalized the fact that people look down upon him for being different. However, as the series progresses, Ro-bin turns out to be a kind, loyal friend who cares deeply for people close to him. Otherwise a pacifist who won’t even harm a fly, Ro-bin isnt averse to violence if he senses his friends are in danger. Chae-ni rightly compares him with the Naegeumwi, aka the royal protectors during the Joseon period, who defended the royal family with their lives. It is fitting that someone like Ro-bin gained the ability of super strength, as they say, those who have been treated as weak know the worth of strength the most.
Ha Won-do Played By Son Hyun-jooRenowned South Korean actor Son Hyun-joo has previously acted in several movies like “The Devil’s Game,” “The Chronicles of Evil,” “Ordinary Person,” “Hide and Seek,” etc. Hyun-joo has also made a mark on the small screen scene with ventures like “The Chaser,” “My Rosy Life,” and “Justice.” to name a few. In “The Wonderfools,” he plays the role of Dr. Ha Won-do, the chief of the Wunderkinder Project, a straight up evil, manipulative person whose complete disregard for human life makes him quite a sociopath. Won-do feels no remorse for subjecting children to horrendous mistreatment and experiments, separating them from their families and causing the deaths of many, and justifies his actions as a necessary sacrifice for the pursuit of scientific progress. As if that wasn’t enough, Won-do manipulates the captive test subjects to make them cling to the false hope of a cure, exploiting their longing for filial connection to make them do his dirty deeds. Finding a cure for immortality, which led to the manhunt for the Child of Eternity and the apocalypse crisis, isn’t Won-do’s main objective behind all the vile actions he has committed. He believes he can push humanity to the next stage by mutating them, and wants to leave a mark with his scientific brilliance.
Miscellaneous CharactersAside from the main characters, “The Wonderfools” is stacked with a talented ensemble supporting cast who delivered remarkable performances in the roles they were given. Kim Jeon-bok plays the role of Chae-ni’s grandmother, formerly a financier of the Wunderkinder Project who regrets her past actions and is trying to make amends by watching over the surviving orphans. Bae Na-ra plays the role of Kim Pal-ho, one of the test subjects who has the ability of gravity manipulation and is fiercely loyal to Won-do. Jun Yi-seo plays the role of Seok Ju-ran, a former test subject who has the ability of mind manipulation and considers Won-do as her father. Choi Yoon-ji plays the role of Seok Ho-ran, another former captive who possesses the power of creating hallucinations and has feelings for Un-jeong.
