'Marshals' Ending Explained And Finale Recap: Has Tom Weaver Kidnapped Tate?
[Spoiler Alert] Marshals’ ending delivers a crazy twist, revealing that Tom Weaver, the man who owed his life to Kayce, was the person responsible for bringing chaos to his land and putting the lives of his loved ones at risk. He was the one who ordered multiple hits on Thomas Rainwater, as he wanted to get rid of the chairman of Broken Rock in order to clear the path for the Crestmark Mining Company. From the very beginning of the season, this mining company had its greedy eyes set on the reservation land, and it’s possible that either Tom Weaver (a former Wall Street man) has some kind of stake in Crestmark, or he may have cracked a deal with Nancy, which will further his goal, that is, to own the entire valley (which I believe is the reason why he was so bent on buying Kayce’s East Camp). In short, every bit of havoc that went down in the finale of Marshals season 1 was meticulously planned by Weaver and his minions, but when Kayce and his team stopped him from achieving his objectives, Weaver decided to exploit Kayce’s vulnerability; he took away his son, Tate, with him, to Texas. Well, that’s a perfect setup for the second season, so allow me to dive deeper into the finale and theorize about what we can expect next.
Weaver Is Pulling The StringsRainwater was going to attend the Senate Committee to convince the senators to halt the mining operation, because he knew it would destroy the quality of life on the reservation and force the people out of their own lands; however, on his way to the airport, a private mercenary in a vehicle opened fire on Rainwater’s car and stopped him from leaving town. For the entirety of episode 13, Calvin and his team had been trying to figure out who could have shared the intel about Rainwater’s whereabouts with these private military contractors. The culprit turned out to be Council Member Nathan Irons, an opposition leader, who had shaken hands with Tom Weaver to get rid of their common enemy, Thomas Rainwater. It’s likely that once Weaver’s mercenaries dealt with Rainwater, Irons would have become the next chairman of Broken Rock, paving the road for Weaver and his friends to exploit the valley as they saw fit. Thankfully, things didn’t come to that, as Kayce and his team foiled their intricately designed operation.
When Mo informed Kayce about another assassination attempt on Rainwater, Kayce asked Mo to bring Rainwater to East Camp, as he believed no one would expect them to be hiding on his land. But unfortunately, Weaver was already two steps ahead of Kayce. In episode 4, Weaver had offered to lend Kayce some men to do the ranch work in his absence, and it was one of these minions who informed Weaver of Rainwater’s arrival at Kayce’s house, shortly after which a group of nine international mercenaries showed up at East Camp to finish the job, but as always, Kayce and his gang saved the day without any collateral damage. However, Weaver was aware that the Marshals would be investigating the attack, so he ordered his right-hand and foreman, Jeb, to cover their tracks. Jeb murdered Council Member Nathan Irons, making his death look like a suicide, and later put a bullet in the man planted on Kayce’s ranch who had informed them about Rainwater’s arrival.
Belle And Calvin Are Likely Not DeadIn Marshals’ ending, Andrea found footage from one of the cameras on Kayce’s ranch, in which she spotted a ranch hand making a phone call as soon as Rainwater arrived at the East Camp. She suspected that he was the snitch who leaked Rainwater’s whereabouts, so Belle and Calvin decided to investigate the matter further, as Andrea was leaving the team and going back to Washington D.C. When Belle and Calvin arrived at the man’s house, Belle looked through the window and spotted his body, but before they could break into the house, Belle saw Jeb sitting in his car. He quickly drove away, leaving behind two mercenaries who suddenly opened fire on Belle and Calvin, and even though it seemed like Belle and Calvin wouldn’t survive the attack, trust me, these two are coming back in season 2, so they are most certainly gonna take down these two assailants. However, it’s possible that one of them will get hurt in the gunfight and end up in urgent medical need at the very beginning of season 2, just to create some drama, you know. But there’s one more detail here which I really want to point out. I guess Belle and Calvin saw Jeb’s face clearly before he left the scene, and if they see this man again (with Weaver), they will instantly be able to recognize the guy who left behind two armed men to kill them. So it wouldn’t be difficult for these two to connect the dots and conclude that it was Weaver who had been pulling the strings all along.
Weaver Is The Wolf In The ValleyWell, Yellowstone fans are already aware of Kayce’s association with “wolf,” which was why, when MO said “the wolves are back,” I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about how it has always been a wolf in Kayce’s backyard that has threatened the lives of everyone he loves. It just so happens that, this time around, this “wolf” has a human face. But I don’t think Weaver’s daughter, Dolly, knows anything about her father’s sinister motives. She never forced Kayce to sell off his ranch to her father, and always told him to do what his heart desires, which makes me believe that Weaver has kept his daughter in the dark, because he knows that she would never agree with his evil ambitions. However, you may ask, what are Weaver’s real motives?
I guess the reason why Weaver was so bent on buying Kayce’s land is that he wants to own all of Paradise Valley. And I think if he had got his hands on Kayce’s land, he would have likely used his ranch to infiltrate Broken Rock and weaken it from within, forcing Rainwater to let the mining company do their thing. You see, Weaver’s just another Donald Whitfield, or Market Equities, who are looking to invest in Montana to double their profits without concerning themselves about what their operation is gonna do to the sacred land. I think Kayce understood Weaver’s true intentions when he told him that he would bring a “thousand pairs” to East Camp to increase his profits. Kayce told him that many cattle would put a lot of pressure on the soil, but his words fell on deaf ears, because you see, he’s not a rancher, he’s a businessman. The valley had already given Kayce enough signs (the howling and the crows) not to sell his land to such a shrewd businessman, and Weaver’s words just confirmed his doubts. We know that Tate doesn’t want to become a rancher, and Kayce hasn’t been able to look after the ranch by himself, but he didn’t want to give away his family’s land to a person who saw it as a commodity and was going to turn it into a cash cow. This was why, in the end, he decided to keep the land, and decided to use a part of the ranch to open an equine therapy center for vets, named after his fallen friend and brother, Double G (aka Garrett), to honor his memory. Andrea was quite touched by this.
Weaver Likely Kidnaps TateSo after Kayce and his team saved the day and eliminated most of the threats to Rainwater’s life, the Chairman, along with Mo and Miles Kittle, flew out of Montana to attend the meeting with the senators, and through his speech, he convinced them to put a 60-day suspension on the mining operations so that the review committee could search for alternate sites in the area which wouldn’t destroy the tribal land and put people’s lives at risk. However, this is certainly a big loss for Tom Weaver and his friends at Crestmark Mining, because the company still needs to pay its workers even if the mines have been shut down. This means the corporate organizations need to find a way to restart their operations as quickly as possible, to avoid the debts, and I think this was the reason Weaver showed up at Kayce’s house and requested to take Tate to Texas for bass fishing. The show has already established Tate’s interest in fishing, so I think it wasn’t hard for Weaver to convince the young boy to go with him. But the thing is, men like Weaver don’t do anything for anyone unless it serves their own selfish interests, and this brings me to the theory that Weaver took Tate with him because he has some ill intentions in mind. I think in the very beginning of the episode, he’s gonna inform Kayce that Tate has gone missing (or has been kidnapped), and Kayce will be approached by some folks who’ll ask him to convince Rainwater to change his mind. Tate’s abduction is gonna put Kayce in a tough spot, as he’ll have to choose between his duty towards the reservation and his love for the only person he has left in this world. Maybe in the end, Dolly will help Kayce rescue Tate from her father’s grip, but that’s a story for another day. As of now, Weaver’s gonna use Tate as leverage to further his goals, and it will be interesting to see how Kayce eventually brings his son to safety.
Calvin Will Likely RetireIn the penultimate episode, Calvin told Belle that the pain in his shoulder and neck was caused by a tumor at the top of his lung, and according to doctors, it was a symptom of cancer. This means Calvin ought to consult an oncologist immediately; however, he had been avoiding a visit to the hospital, because one mishap after another had been keeping him pretty occupied. In the finale, Calvin even suggested that he might step down from his position, wanting Andrea to fill his shoes, but she was already leaving for D.C. Well, as of now, Calvin has two important tasks at hand. First of all, he needs to visit the oncologist in Salt Lake with Belle, so a specialist can properly diagnose his symptoms and suggest the best possible treatment for his condition. And secondly, he needs to tell his teammates, that is Kayce, Miles, Andrea (if she returns), and especially his daughter, about his illness. In the last episode, Calvin had been able to mend his relationship with his daughter, Maddie (to some extent), after he let Miles (Maddie’s boyfriend) return to duty. After Miles left with Rainwater, Maddie sat with Calvin so the two could finally talk. Well, it’s a start, and I think, sooner or later, Calvin will be able to tell Maddie about what he’s going through, so he has his family around before he takes his last breath. Well, unless his tumor is not carcinogenic, and he returns to duty after a simple operation. However, if Calvin’s illness is really serious, then I don’t think Harry Gifford will allow him to resume his duty and will immediately find a substitute to take up Calvin’s position. If Andrea returns to Montana, then I guess she will be the one leading the team.
Belle And Andrea’s Sub PlotsThe penultimate episode of Marshals randomly introduced Belle’s gambling addiction (in her former life, before she joined the Marshals in Montana), because of which she owed some 20,000 dollars to a casino. A collector hired by the casino threatened to contact her husband and her colleagues if she failed to pay off her debt in time. In the finale, Belle asked her husband for money, but he refused her to her face, so this conflict will likely be resolved in the next season. I think Belle’s team will lend her money so she can clear her dues with the casino. Speaking of Andrea, from the very beginning of the show, Andrea had been willing to leave Montana so she could return to her post in D.C., but as the story progressed, she grew fond of the valley’s quietness, especially of the people living in it. It was clear that she wasn’t very keen on leaving for D.C., but because Gifford had already made arrangements for her return, she couldn’t say no. Well, I am sure she’s gonna return, but I can’t say with certainty what is going to bring her back to the valley. Maybe it will be Tate’s abduction, or Calvin’s illness, or maybe something else entirely. Furthermore, I have been saying from episode 1 that Kayce and Andrea are gonna develop romantic feelings for each other, and I know this hasn’t happened yet, but if you look closely, the signs are already there. For now, Kayce is allegedly dating (or spending time) with Weaver’s daughter, Dolly, but we all know that this relationship is not gonna last long, especially after Kayce finds out that it’s Dolly’s father who orchestrated an attack on Rainwater and tried to kill his kid. This means either Dolly herself will leave Montana after her father’s crimes come to light, or Kayce will cut off all communications with her for the reasons mentioned above. And when she’s finally gone, the writers may bring Kayce and Andrea together, which is likely the moment we have all been waiting for. Well, these are just my thoughts on the ending of Marshals, but if you have anything else to share, please feel free to comment below.
