KUCHING, June 6: Phase 1 of the Sarawak Science Centre (SSC) Interactive Experience (SSCiEX) will open its doors on July 29, welcoming visitors to discover science through immersive, hands-on learning experiences.
According to a Facebook post, Phase 1 will be covering the Ground Floor and Level 1 galleries, while Phase 2, which will include Level 2 and Level 3 galleries, is planned for a later date.
Located at Jalan Stadium on a 10.97-acre site, SSCiEX is a Sarawak government initiative under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 aimed at nurturing interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through interactive and experiential learning.
The science centre is set to feature galleries covering physics, engineering, earth science, biology and technology, allowing visitors to explore scientific concepts through experimentation and interactive exhibits.
Among the key attractions are an animatronic dinosaur gallery, a water play zone, a mirror maze, and exhibits showcasing forces, light and sound.
In addition to its galleries, SSCiEX will offer daily science theatre shows, live demonstrations, laboratory sessions for schools and outreach programmes across Sarawak.
The centre is also equipped with a Maker’s Space, specialised laboratories, community farming zones and an on-site hostel to accommodate visiting school groups.
The project was approved by the Sarawak government in 2019 to create a dedicated space where students, families and communities could engage with science beyond the classroom.
Planning began in 2022 with the development of a Strategic Master Plan by Singapore Science Centre, which established the exhibition themes, scope and operating model while incorporating Sarawak’s natural environment and cultural identity into the visitor experience. Construction progressed in 2024, followed by exhibit fabrication and installation works in 2025.
With the official opening of Phase 1 on July 29, SSCiEX is expected to provide Sarawakians with access to science learning experiences comparable to those available in major cities around the world. — DayakDaily
