'From' Season 4 Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained: How Did Fatima Save Kenny?

In episode 6 of From Season 4, Jade and Boyd had an argument about whether or not they can base their next steps off of the mushroom-induced visions that Jade had. When Jade and Boyd didn’t find any secret door in the basement, Boyd put everything that Jade had seen to the side so that he could focus on more important issues like finding the Man in Yellow and getting Victor off the roof of Colony House. Boyd somehow managed to convince Victor to step away from the ledge, go to his room, and see if he could remember any important details about his last encounter with the Man in Yellow, as that could help them tackle him in the present. While Victor got busy with that, Boyd and Kenny met up with Donna and her team that had gone to the Settlement. They learnt about their encounter with the life-sized dolls, how they were immune to the talismans, and that they could be killed with the help of these giant totems. Meanwhile, Fatima was still working on her golem, and Sophia was working her magic on Henry. Elsewhere, Julie formed a bond with Sara, because both of them had gone through this arc of being convinced that they were a cut above the rest (of the people in the town) before being humbled almost immediately. Going back to Donna, she suffered a heart attack and barely survived it because of Boyd’s dogged determination to keep her alive. That whole incident prompted Boyd to go back into the basement and smash the wall with a sledgehammer where, as per Jade’s vision, a door should have existed. Eventually, the wall came down and a door was revealed. What happened next? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Boyd Tells The Residents About The Reincarnation Theory

Episode 7 of From Season 4 starts off the proceedings with Jade and Randall trying to open the door that Boyd has discovered in the basement of the Colony House, but it’s not moving even an inch. Jade assumes that while they can’t open it from this side, there’s a good chance it’s accessible from the other side, which is connected to the tunnels that lead to the cave where the creatures live (as per Jade’s vision). So, he puts a talisman on the door just to be on the safe side. Meanwhile, Boyd and Kenny are searching for Henry because, firstly, he’s not in Colony House, and secondly, they need to talk to him about Tabitha being the reincarnation of Miranda. When they see Henry stumbling into Colony House, drunk out of his mind (which has probably been exacerbated by Sophia’s blood), they start wondering how they are gonna break the news to him that his wife is back, just as another person, while he’s still processing the circumstances under which Miranda perished. Boyd decides to do it raw; he takes Henry to Victor’s room and straight-up tells the father and the son that Miranda has been reincarnated as Tabitha. Henry absolutely loses it and storms out of the room, because he is not in the right mind to accept supernatural theories. Boyd tries to check if Victor has understood what he’s trying to say, and Victor makes it clear that while he gets what Boyd is saying, he doesn’t want to hear anymore about it. Alternatively, he wants Boyd to seek out the Man in Yellow, because his return to the Township means that a rehash of the massacre that wiped out all the people there when Victor was a child is gonna happen again.

Boyd goes downstairs and shares the reincarnation theory with all the residents. Bakta wonders if the central group of characters are reincarnations of previous residents, are the “supporting characters” also reincarnated versions of deceased residents as well? Jade says that that’s probably not the case, thereby preventing everyone other than the main group of characters from developing some kinda “main character energy.” Randall understands that the reincarnated versions of previous residents have to lead the charge; then what should everyone else do? Jade thinks that since the Anghkooey kids appear in random places and start whining, maybe some of the non-reincarnated residents have heard them. Now, even if the non-reincarnated residents can hear the residents of the Anghkoeey children, they can’t do anything about it. However, they can at least find the plan to unearth those children’s bones and destroy them to break the loop that the town has trapped them in to be somewhat believable. Because if they know the children, or the ghosts of the children, exist, then they’d understand why they are integral to solving the mystery. Kristi thinks this whole discussion is pointless, because it’s based entirely on Jade’s mushroom trip. Boyd challenges that by bringing up the door in the basement. According to Boyd, that door is the biggest proof that mushroom trips in the Township aren’t like regular mushroom trips; they are a window into Fromville’s best-kept secrets. Marielle questions that, because she thinks that that’s as weird as all the other messed-up stuff the place conjures. Boyd says that that might be true, but he thinks that the “Knowledge comes at a cost” message means that they are inching closer towards solving the mystery of the Township, and the architect of this place, or the Man in Yellow, is afraid of that. So, they have to stay on this track, get to the bones of the Anghkoeey children, destroy them, and then hope that that secures their freedom. Before Boyd can say anything else, Henry enters the scene, derails Boyd’s seminar, and then leaves. Boyd tries to go after him but Jade tells him that he’s gonna handle Henry. Unfortunately, no matter what Jade says, Henry isn’t ready to accept the reincarnation theory. So, Boyd tells Jade to lay off him for now.

Tabitha, Ethan, And Victor Find The Man In Yellow & Miranda’s Cars

Ethan finds Tabitha going through Jim’s clothes, smelling them to remember him. Since Julie is home, Ethan tells Tabitha to come downstairs and give her the brief on what they had encountered at the Settlement. With that out of the way, Tabitha talks about how she is the reincarnated version of several other residents who have lived and died in the Township, one of them being Miranda. To process all of this info, Julie steps out to do drugs. Tabitha and Ethan interrupt Julie’s “getting high” session to do a follow-up conversation of what they had discussed earlier. Slight tangent here: why don’t conversation scenes continue until the logical end is reached? Even if Julie exited the discussion that she was having with Tabitha and Ethan, couldn’t we have seen that? The reincarnation discourse is split into 2 separate days without any rhyme or reason. Just, such a weird way of editing your show. Anyway, going back to part of the reincarnation discourse, Julie tells Tabitha that trusting this theory to be helpful in some way means she’s setting herself up for disappointment, because no part of the Township is there to help out its prisoners. Tabitha says that she’s sure this new clue is gonna help them escape from this hell hole; she and Jade are so sure about it that they have shared this info with the residents. Julie finds that to be preposterous, and walks away from Tabitha and Ethan so that she can have her drugs in peace. As Julie exits the scene, Victor makes his entrance. He wants Tabitha and Ethan to come with him to the junkyard, where all the cars have been abandoned because he wants to inspect the car that the Man in Yellow used to enter the Township back in the day.

While the 3 of them are gone, Henry comes looking for them in Tabitha’s house (Sophia can be seen lurking in the background), and he finds either Victor or Ethan’s drawings on the table. Sifting through those pictures triggers some kinda vision, where he sees himself hooked up to a saline drip and an EKG machine. After a few seconds, he snaps out of it, and he is visibly shaken to his core. Going back to Ethan, Tabitha, and Victor, they find the Man in Yellow’s car, as well as the one that belonged to Miranda. While Victor finds a pouch full of teeth in the glove box of the Man in Yellow’s car (Sophia kept the pastor’s tooth as a souvenir, which means this is a tradition for the Man in Yellow), Tabitha taps into Miranda’s memory of entering the Township (or driving around in there) after taking one look into Miranda’s car. Victor obviously freaks out, and he starts saying that they need to prepare Ethan for the massacre that’s about to happen. Victor thinks that when Miranda arrived in the township, she brought in a girl and a boy, and the boy (Victor) survived. Miranda’s reincarnation, Tabitha, has brought in a girl and a boy, which means that Ethan is the only one who’s gonna survive this round of killings. Victor’s ramblings upset Ethan, and he walks away from the junkyard, prompting Tabitha to go after him. By the way, doesn’t Victor’s equation have a problem? Miranda came in with a boy and a girl, sure; but Tabitha entered with her boy, girl, and husband. Doesn’t that mean things are gonna be different this time around? Or has Jim’s death evened things out? But that’s not how it should work, right? I don’t know. Feel free to enlighten me, because the show sure isn’t gonna. Going back to Julie for a second, Elgin sits down with her at the diner. They talk about Jim’s death, the rate at which Elgin’s eye is healing, and Miranda being reincarnated as Tabitha. Elgin wants to know if they have a chance of escaping this Township now that they know that Tabitha is Miranda. Julie repeats her stance on this matter: Any attempt to find a solution to the mystery of this place always ends with death. Elgin refutes that sort of nihilism as he thinks that there is a way out of this Township, they just have to remain hopeful.

Boyd Chalks Up A Plan To Invade The Tunnels

Jade, Boyd, and Kenny are in Colony House discussing how they can get in and out of the tunnels (with the Anghkooey kids’ bones) without getting ripped to shreds. For starters, he wants Jade to pool the information from Victor and Tabitha’s trip to the tunnels and create a layout of the whole place. That way, they’ll know about every entry and exit point. Furthermore, Boyd tells Jade to consult with Randall, because he is the most knowledgeable of them all when it comes to understanding the creatures’ movement patterns, since he spends his nights in that damned bus, looking at the creatures move around. Kenny says that regardless of what they do and who they consult, they have to keep in mind that the harder they try to beat the Township, the harder the Township is gonna try to enslave them. As this discussion is going on, Jade notices that Boyd’s hand-tremors are more prominent than they were in Season 3. Jade tells him to ignore that and focus on arriving at a solution as quickly as possible because if they leave the residents dangling for too long after doing so much info-dumping on them, they’re gonna get restless and do something stupid. On that note, Boyd heads out and spots Acosta playing with that View-Master toy. She wants to talk about the veracity of the reincarnation stuff that Boyd told the residents. Boyd puts that to the side and tells Acosta to form two teams, one for the Colony House basement, and another for the diner, to find clues that can help them catch the Man in Yellow. Even though Acosta thinks that that’s preposterous, she has no choice but to work on it. Acosta leaves and hands over the View-Master to Boyd. While taking a breather from everything, Boyd decides to flip through the View-Master, and is shocked to see a photo of him and Abby when both of them were super young.

When he puts down the View-Master for a few seconds and looks into it again, the pic is gone, which means that it’s an illusion created by the Township. But how does it have access to Boyd and Abby’s old photograph? Did he have it with him when he entered the Township? If not, how can the Township create it as an illusion? Is the View-Master giving an actual peek into the real world? I guess we’ll find out later. For now, Boyd puts away the View-Master and engages in a conversation with Kristi about Donna and the reincarnation stuff. Kristi tells him to come to the clinic later so that she can examine him and make sure that he’s head is in the right place; Boyd says that he will. Then he goes into Donna’s room, and Donna seems displeased at Boyd’s decision to tell the residents about the reincarnation theory, the dead children’s bones, and the newly-discovered door in the basement. After that, they talk about Roger’s burial, which Boyd still hasn’t done because apparently they’re running out of space to do burials. That agitates Donna, but Boyd assures her that he’ll take care of it soon. Boyd then changes the topic to the totems she has brought from the Settlement, and seeing if it can be used to kill the creatures just like it killed one of the life-sized dolls. Donna reminds Boyd that even if they manage to kill one of the creatures, there’s a chance it might be reborn, just like the Smiley creature was reborn as Fatima’s kid. Boyd knows about that possibility, but he still wants to try and kill a creature with that totem.

Fatima Saves Kenny

Sophia attends Acosta’s debriefing for the clue-finding mission, and she spots Boyd leaving Colony House with one of the totems. Kristi finds Marielle in the shed sitting beside Roger’s body, and she tries to give her the “Roger is in a better place” spiel. But based on Marielle’s theory, death isn’t an escape from the Township; your soul apparently gets trapped in that dungeon that Marielle keeps seeing in her visions, and you are left to suffer there for all eternity. Meanwhile, Boyd and Ellis discuss how they are gonna corner one of the creatures at night and stab it with the totem. Once they are done with all that, Boyd heads into his office, and since he’s alone, Sophia steps in there to have a chat about digging up the bones of the Anghkooey kids. Sophia wonders if that’s dangerous, and Boyd says that they have to take the risk; they’re dying one way or the other, so, why shouldn’t they risk it all? Boyd also ends up revealing that he intends to use that totem to stab the creatures. Sophia seemingly sees that as her cue to leave. She goes to the chicken coop, steals one of the eggs, then goes to the shed, mutters some kinda spell over it, cracks it onto Roger’s dead body, and tells him to wake up. In the meantime, Jade gets working on that tunnel layout, and his process frustrates Kenny, which prompts them to get into an argument about what they used to do before getting trapped in the Township. That’s interrupted by Henry and Ellis, because Ellis wants to talk to Kenny (in private) about Boyd’s plan to tackle one of the creatures with that totem all by himself. Since Jade gets Henry all to himself, he tries to talk to him about Tabitha being Miranda. This is when Henry sees another one of his hallucinations, where he sees himself in a hospital room with Victor trying to wake him up from his slumber. Jade snaps him out of it, but Henry freaks out too much and runs away from Jade.

So, these hallucinations are a result of Sophia’s spell. Sophia put the thought in Henry’s mind that the Township is a dream that they just have to wake up from. Hence, that spell is forcing Henry to think that he’s actually in a hospital being looked after by Victor, and that everything in this town is a figment of his imagination; all he has to do is wake up. Going back to Boyd, he gives Sara the assignment of telling everyone who has a house near the Post Office to stay near the doors so that if the creature-killing mission goes sideways, he can get to safety as quickly as possible. On that note, Boyd performs his daily duty of getting everyone into their respective house. In Colony House, Fatima spots Donna roaming around and she compels her to get back into bed. Sophia, instead of staying in Sara’s house, decides to stay in Colony House. Boyd reunites with Kenny and Ellis at the Post Office to prepare for the attack. Kenny and Ellis talk Boyd out of facing off with the creatures, and it’s Kenny who goes in his stead. So, in the ending of From Season 4 episode 7, while Kenny attacks one of the creatures with the totem, zombie-Roger infiltrates Colony House. The totem does nothing to the creature Kenny stabs. On top of that, the creatures block the entrances of all the buildings around the Post Office, which prompts Kenny to go into the bus. The Smiley creature gets into the bus and as it transforms into a monster, Fatima seemingly gets a hold of his mind. As the Smiley creature is reeling from the shock of this turn of events, Kenny kicks the creature out of the bus, activates the talisman, and secures himself for the night. As for the zombified Roger, Elgin impales him with the second totem that was brought from the Settlement (a small moment of redemption for Elgin), while Sophia looks at this chaos from afar.

Fatima Can Control The Smiley Creature

The concluding moments of From Season 4 episode 7 give us a lot of information to process. Hence, allow me to go through it bit by bit. Firstly, Fatima’s ability to control the Smiley creature. Apparently, Fatima can not only occasionally see things from the Smiley creature’s POV, she can also control him. I don’t exactly know if she can puppeteer him when he’s in humanoid form, but when he gets monsterized, it’s probably easier to get access to his bodily functions. This is undoubtedly a gamechanger, because now Fatima can try and get the Smiley creature to kill his own. So far, everything that humans have done has been ineffective, but maybe a creature killing another creature will do the trick. Of course, Fatima has to do this judiciously, because if the Smiley creature himself dies, then the humans’ wild card is gone. This link between Fatima and the Smiley creature exists because they are literally mother and son. Did the architect who engineered this process of creature regeneration not foresee this? Maybe not. Maybe they thought that even if a human being figures it out, they won’t be powerful enough to control a creature. However, Fatima is determined enough to surprise creatures and the Township’s architects. Does the golem have something to do with it? Maybe not literally, but making that reminded Fatima of the fantastical stories her father used to tell her, and it’s possible that that strengthened her resolve to such an extent that she got to puppeteer that Smiley creature. This maneuver has lowkey painted a target on Fatima’s back though, because the creatures or Sophia are gonna try to kill her so that the humans don’t have an upper hand in this battle of wits and brawn. Secondly, the totem doesn’t work on the creatures. So, the plan to use the totems while going through the tunnels isn’t gonna work. The totem does work on the reanimated Roger, who can seemingly bypass talismans too.

Now, you’d be thinking that there aren’t a lot of reanimated human beings out there, so the totems being useful on such creatures doesn’t really matter that much. But here’s the thing: if Fatima ends up using the Smiley creature to kill a bunch of those creatures, and that prompts Sophia to reanimate a bunch of humans, then those totems are gonna come in really handy; hopefully, the residents figure that out before it’s too late. Last but not the least, there’s the part about the creatures standing guard in front of all the places where Kenny could have rushed to safety. I think that happened because Boyd told Sara that that was a part of his plan, and since Sophia is tapped into Sara’s mind, she probably extracted that info out of her and passed it onto the creatures. Therefore, from now on, the residents of the town will have to be careful about what they say in front of Sara and Henry, because both of them are Sophia’s spies. This is not something they are gonna figure out sometime soon. I think once Boyd and his crew notice several instances where the creatures are one step ahead of them, they’re gonna run some fake operations to see who’s the weak link amongst them. Hopefully, neither Sara nor Henry will be punished for unintentionally spying for Sophia, and Sophia’s gonna be caught red-handed for making these residents go through all kinds of hell. Well, those are all the thoughts I have about this episode. What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments section below.
