'Not Suitable For Work' Episodes 6-7 Recap & Review: Will Abby Be Okay?
I suppose the relationship between Bill and AJ is meant to be a wholesome one that encourages us to voice our feelings and just “go for it,” but the truth is, it feels so removed from reality that I just can’t get myself to wrap my head around it comfortably. On the other hand, everyone else’s storylines feel more grounded than ever. I do think it’s funny how stupid Davis and Josh are, but I can’t say it’s false advertising in any way. Anyway, I do think this week’s episodes of Not Suitable For Work were a bit of a let-down in comparison to the previous 5. With only two episodes left this season, I worry the show will not have enough substance to keep us wanting to come back for another despite being moderately entertaining. I definitely enjoy the show as I’m watching it, though I don’t think I’m the kind of person who laughs out loud while watching a comedy anyway, so maybe I’m not the best judge. With that said, though, let’s jump straight into episodes 6 and 7.
Spoiler Alert
Does Kel Get His First Acting Gig?Not Suitable For Work episode 6 sees a falling out between the boys, because Josh and Davis just don’t seem to see Kel’s work as important. They openly and very frustratingly tell him that he was essentially much cooler when he was going to be a doctor, and they’re not going to bother keeping things down when he clearly has work the next day. Feeling completely let down by his pals while his family is already not talking to him, Kel has no choice but to bunk in the girls’ flat. At first, it starts out literally perfect, with Kel even baking the girls some breakfast muffins, keeping things clean, etc., and on the other hand, the girls have a clean couch, plus they don’t disturb him for unnecessary things. But the problem arises when Abby gets mad at AJ for not realising that Bill is basically using her.
Abby’s not wrong with her analysis, considering Bill doesn’t want AJ to stay over. He doesn’t really take her out; they’re basically just sleeping together, it’s not really dating. But because it’s so real, AJ gets mad about Abby’s reaction to her being “happy” and decides to back off a little. This means they’re not really talking to each other about it, but they can talk to Kel, the make-shift third roommate in this situation. All Kel can say to the both of them is that the other person needs to be a supportive friend, leading to both of them being happy to confide in him. In the meanwhile, his actual roommates are suffering from his absence, because it seems they don’t even know how to do the dishes or take out the trash. This man was literally a med student. Why was he doing all the household chores? Eventually, the situation gets so bad that Davis throws the trash out from their window, and it lands straight on the landlord, who tells them to fix their problems or get out. This is when they decide to write Kel a handwritten letter of apology each, and Kel doesn’t even take a second to forgive them, because AJ and Abby realize he was two-timing them (in that he was siding with both of them and not being helpful to either) and want him out too.
Now, there’s definitely a small moment in these few days when Abby and Kel shared a connection, one that could’ve looked like a romantic spark, but Kel concludes that she’s not interested and gets with Kate, his colleague again (they have history, is what I gathered). Anyway, in episode 7, while teaching his class, Kel learns that one of his fav broadway directors is doing an audition for his new show, but they won’t take anyone who doesn’t have an agent to book them for an audition. Kel gets Davis to pretend to be his agent, and it works to get him the audition, but when he’s there, they already know it was all fake; however, Kel’s got enough to get them to see him, and that’s what they do. While the leading role goes to Lakeith Stanfield, who Davis calls L.A. Keith for some reason (yeah, wasn’t the gag it was meant to be, but that’s okay), Kel still gets a part, even if he just has two lines. This is his first step, and he’s worked very hard on it.
Does Davis Learn Of AJ’s Secret Affair?Meanwhile, AJ and Bill are sleeping together every opportunity they get. Abby even comments on the number of “dates” being 4 a week, which AJ corrects to 5. But it’s only fun and games until Abby tells AJ that it’s going a bit far, and if she wants something serious, she should talk to Bill about it. Eventually, AJ does, and Bill decides to take her on a date. The date is sweet, because he takes her to Staten Island, but the ride there itself is the date. She thinks it’s some kind of joke at first, especially with how gorgeous she looks, but this is a rare moment where Bill shows AJ that he might actually be human. He tells her that before he was this huge investment banker cool guy, he was poor, and he used to dream about making it big, but the ride back home to Staten Island used to be the best part of his day. AJ is touched, and it becomes clear that Bill is genuinely into her. They’re also adults who can talk about what they want, so AJ straight-up asks Bill if he wants to see other people, to which he says that she makes him not want to. OMG, a rich dude who knows how to be romantic, real men could never.
Anyway, one of these days, Josh ends up seeing Bill walk out of the flat, and he later realises that he’s the guy on Davis’ cup. As in, his mentor and boss, Bill. The boys do this thing where they get steak and drinks so they can have an intervention and eventual breakdown. Kel and Josh plan one for Davis to tell him the truth because they promised not to lie to him, but that’s the day Josh learns that his dad is leaving his mum, so he’s the one who has a cry, rather than Davis. Additionally, Elena also left him because he’s so self-centred that he wouldn’t even bother listening to her. And now he learns that his dad has basically always been the bad guy. The next day at work, when his dad drops a coffee on one of Josh’s colleagues’ desks, Josh makes the old man clean up after himself. It’s a huge deal, not just for him, but for everyone at work, so maybe he’ll be more liked now than ever. Or this could have the opposite reaction. Eh, who knows?
Anyway, it’s AJ’s birthday, and her mum shows up all excited, but AJ works too many hours and can’t do birthday dinner. This makes her mum want to surprise her at work, but it happens to be when the team is on a call with Spanx. This gets Bill to come out aggressively and kinda sorta yell at AJ’s mum. She’s not the kinda person to care, but AJ does end up hurting her mum by saying she has a job and not a career, so she can’t understand her (dang). AJ’s mum ends up spending the next day telling Davis what happened, because he sees her scrambling around outside the apartment. In this conversation, which sorts her out of course, she also tells Davis that AJ told her she liked someone at work, and Davis seems like the likely candidate (oops). So that’s when he decides to finally confess to AJ, but luckily, Josh and Kel tell him the truth, which leads to him having a full-blown cry at home. It’s definitely wholesome. But also, we’re thinking Josh and AJ are the ultimate couple, right?
Does Austin Fire Abby?On the other hand, sweet and ambitious Abby is going through her own problems; she’s being blacklisted by the stylist community because Vanessa has told everyone in the industry that she betrayed her. But she has success with an anti-ketamine ad she does for Austin, for which she pays for the garments herself. It’s such a huge success that she decides to pitch Austin as a brand ambassador to the designer, but by the time it’s all sorted out, Austin tells Abby that Sofia Copala, whom he calls Fi, has connected him with a different stylist, and he’s going to go with her. In the ending of episode 7, a flabbergasted Abby throws Austin out of her house, knowing she probably won’t have a job for a really long time. She’s left all on her own, while Mister “serious” actor doesn’t even care that he’s basically ruined her life. I’m so glad she didn’t cross that boundary with him. But this leaves us wondering what’s coming next for her.
Episodes 6 And 7 ReviewI already mentioned how I felt a little disappointed by the sixth and seventh episode of Not Suitable For Work, but I can’t really put my finger on why exactly. I just feel like we need more time to get to know these characters better, and maybe things are starting to look a little bit superficial, especially on the boys’ side. This is not to say I hate the show now or anything. But if it carries on this way, I might not be that invested in these stories anymore. I said this last week, too, but I want to see more interaction between the group as a whole rather than in pockets, because I do think that’s what I’m looking for in a show like this. It’s not so much office romances and job struggles as much as it is a bit of friendship to make everything better, you know?
