'Little Brother' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Did Marcus And Rudd Reunite?

Rudd Landy has a lot going on in his life, and even in his wildest dreams, he perhaps never thought that a random dude who’d recently been in a car accident would claim to be his “little brother”! Netflix comedy drama film Little Brother, starring John Cena and Eric Andre as big bro and lil bro, respectively, is about this weird situation that Rudd finds himself in that he struggles to deal with. You see, Rudd is an insecure overthinker, who always assumes the worst in every possible situation, and his only goal in life is to prove to the world that he is no less than his big brother, Josh Landy. Josh is a billionaire hedge fund manager, a philanthropist, a money mogul who lives lavishly, is friends with celebrities, and has an infectiously charming personality that always brightens up every room he enters. Rudd hates Josh; he thinks his brother looks down on him, and everything he does is basically to humiliate him. But is that really true? Or is it just Rudd’s insecurity speaking? Let’s find out!

Spoiler Alert

How did Marcus change Rudd’s life?

Marcus and Rudd are complete opposites; Marcus is fun and chaotic, while Rudd is all about discipline and proving himself. So, when Marcus enters Rudd’s life, everything goes upside down! While Rudd barely remembers him, Marcus has a framed picture of him and Rudd from when they were young, and he apparently had been exchanging emails with him. Rudd’s last email had left Marcus feeling a little uneasy; he could sense that something was really wrong, and his big brother needed him. So, he escapes from a recovery center, drives to New York, and ends up in a car accident. He’d told the doctors to contact Rudd, and that was when Rudd discovered that his little brother was in town. Rudd and Marcus weren’t related by blood; Rudd had signed up for a charity thing during his school days where he became Marcus’ big brother, and had spent time with him. They shared a sweet bond, but it evidently didn’t mean as much to Rudd as it did to Marcus.

Marcus grew up in foster homes, he never really had one constant family, so the people he connected with, he loved with all his heart. Rudd is one of those people, he really thinks they have something special and well, his assumption isn’t completely baseless, they have had long conversations over email. But the truth is, Rudd wasn’t the one responding to the emails, his assistant, Mia, had grown fond of Marcus and he’d been talking to her all this time! Rudd had asked Mia to respond to one email and ensure that Marcus never contacted him, but she failed to do so and ended up bonding with him. Rudd’s wife, Deirdre, has a big heart, she is either rescuing animals from the kill list or organising charity events, so when she finds out about Marcus, she encourages Rudd to let his little brother stay at their place.

Rudd is already nervous about his upcoming appearance on the reality show, “NYC Hustlers,” and dealing with Marcus is this extra hassle that he isn’t ready to sign up for. He tries to bribe Marcus, but that doesn’t quite work out. Marcus and Deirdre soon became good friends; he understood her and made her feel seen, something Rudd had failed to do. Rudd has a lot on the line; if he succeeds in delivering a good performance on the reality show, his real estate business will take off. So, he is razor-focused on getting the job done, and in the process, he fails to see that the pressure has affected his relationship with Deirdre. Rudd almost aces his on-screen performance, but that’s before the camera notices Marcus. Rudd was delivering an emotional line of dialogue and just then the cameraman noticed Marcus taking a leak from Rudd’s car. Rudd is shocked to see the mess Marcus has made; his car door is gone, everything is dirty inside and in just a few seconds, his most prized possession has been completely destroyed. He is furious, but according to the show producers, it’s great content. When Marcus talks about his relationship with Rudd and how he is the best big brother, the producers immediately realize that this story is going to help them make money. Rudd is now forced to make appearances with Marcus, and he hates the fact that Marcus is now stealing his spotlight. He decides he has to do something drastic for the show that will make him look like the real deal. Rudd talks to his big brother and asks him to give him the listing for his luxurious property, and he agrees to do so, although Josh mentions that he’ll make the big announcement on the show.

Why did Rudd expose Marcus?

Marcus always had a big smile on his face, but he sensed that for some reason he couldn’t really connect with Rudd, so he spoke to Mia to understand what he could possibly do to win over Rudd. Mia advises him not to steal the spotlight from Rudd, and Marcus is visibly apologetic for unconsciously doing so and promises to keep her advice in mind. At Josh’s house party (where he is supposed to make the big listing announcement) Marcus intentionally stays away from the camera and lets Rudd take over, but when Marcus laughs at a joke Rudd cracks, Josh invites him to take a seat with him for dinner. Rudd isn’t happy with how quickly Marcus and Josh bond, and he figures he has to do something to keep them apart. To prove that he’s not uptight, Rudd ends up taking drugs, and that just makes things worse for him. He asks Marcus to stay outside on the balcony, to keep him away from Josh, but Josh ends up finding Marcus and they have a conversation about Rudd. Josh mentions that he is trying to act cool about giving the listing to Rudd and even making it look like he might as well give it to Marcus, but that’s just to add some drama for the show. Josh genuinely wants Rudd to have his big moment, and Marcus is extremely happy to hear about it and asks Josh if he can make the announcement, which Josh is glad to let him do. But Rudd obviously assumes the worst when he sees Josh talk to Marcus. He rushes to stop Josh from giving Marcus the listing, and in the process, he trips on a wire and lands on Josh, who ends up falling from the balcony to the ground. Thanks to Marcus, who gives Josh an emergency tracheotomy, he survives.

Rudd hates the fact that Marcus has once again become the hero by saving his brother, so he decides to embarrass him on camera. He calls Marcus a scam artist and accuses him of trying to steal the listing from him. Marcus tells him that isn’t the case, but obviously he doesn’t listen. He pulls out Marcus’ hospital bracelet from the psych ward that he’d found in his belongings and tells everyone that he is mentally unstable. Marcus admits that he hasn’t been completely honest, because he was afraid of being rejected. He was severely lonely, and he genuinely thought he was going to hurt himself, which was why he’d checked himself into a recovery center but that didn’t really help him. He genuinely thought he had a connection with Rudd because of the emails they’d exchanged, and Mia had no choice but to admit that she was the one who wrote back to him, not Rudd. Marcus feels cheated, and Rudd adds that he didn’t respond to the emails because Marcus was nothing but a stranger. Marcus walks away, he feels awful after how everything unfolded. He thought he’d found a brother in Rudd, but clearly it was a one-sided relationship!

Did Rudd own up to his mistake?

Rudd’s family is upset with him; Deidre doesn’t talk to him and his sons simply ignore him. He has lost the respect of his loved ones and he struggles to figure out how he can fix things. He always saw Marcus as a threat, but when he starts to think about the friendship they shared when they were young, he remembers how Marcus had always worshiped him. Even when Rudd hated himself, Marcus thought he was really cool and genuinely enjoyed his company. For Rudd, it was just a charity thing that he did to make his college application look good, but for Marcus it wasn’t  a transaction, he really thought he had found a brother.

The show producers want Rudd to receive the “Big Brother” award hosted by the Big Brothers, Little Brothers organization that Deidre had become a part of. According to their plan, Marcus is supposed to give Rudd the award, but since Marcus has refused to be a part of it, they’ve brought in a replacement, a man who can be passed off as Marcus, and with VFX, they plan on superimposing Marcus’ face onto his. Rudd shows up for the event, because he desperately wants to make the reality show work. Since what he did with Marcus was pretty villainous, he thought receiving the “Big Brother” award would give him the redemption arc that he needed. But when Rudd goes on stage, he realizes that to feel genuinely proud of himself, he has to actually redeem himself instead of just doing it for the show. His sons are embarrassed by him, and his wife hates how heartless he has become. He is surprised to see his big brother in the audience, he has come to the event even after the major accident just to support him. While standing on stage, Rudd realizes that he has badly messed up this time. Instead of the fake speech, he expresses that he has failed Marcus terribly. He’d gone through the emails and learned so much about him that now he feels embarrassed by how he behaved with him, when all his little brother needed was love and support. He adds that all his life he has wanted his brother’s approval, but he failed to realize that Josh always had his back. He thought he needed to be successful to win his brother’s affection, but that really wasn’t the case; for Josh, Rudd had always been his little brother. Rudd admits that the people who love him, Marcus, Josh, his wife and his sons, none of them care about whether he is successful or not, they love him unconditionally, but he has failed to realize it and he has been chasing something that doesn’t really matter. He decides not to accept the award, because he doesn’t deserve it, and he walks off the stage, ready to reconnect with Marcus. His wife is finally proud of him, and Josh tells him that he’d been a little envious of Rudd’s life, because he has a beautiful family, and no amount of wealth can ever replace that. Rudd finally realizes what life is all about, and how he has failed to value what he already has.

In Little Brother’s ending, Marcus and Mia drive to the psych ward where Marcus has once again forcefully admitted himself. He doesn’t have anywhere else to go, and he figures the outside world is painful and lonely, and he would rather spend his life in a mental hospital than go back out there. The doctors, though, repeatedly tell him that he doesn’t have any mental health condition, he is just lonely and that can’t be a reason for them to admit him. So, Marcus threatens to kill himself, and he pulls off just enough drama for them to let him stay. Rudd manages to climb to Marcus’ room, and he apologizes to his little brother. After everything he has been through, Marcus isn’t ready to forgive him immediately. Rudd tells him that he is the brother he has always wanted, and he has failed to see him all this time. When Marcus discovers that Rudd has gone through the emails and taken a real interest in his life, he figures, maybe for the first time, Rudd is being honest about his feelings and he actually cares about him. Rudd promises him that they’ll be brothers for life, and that makes Marcus completely emotional. The brothers finally reunite!

What does the future look like for Rudd and Marcus?

Marcus convinced Rudd to spend some time with him playing basketball like he’d promised when they were kids. Mia apologized for catfishing him, but she admitted that she’d fallen for him and their similar taste in music wasn’t fake. Marcus likes Mia as well, and they surely make a cute couple! Rudd and Marcus now call themselves the “Broker Brothers,” and their joint business endeavor seems to be working! “New York Hustlers” has cast Rudd and Marcus lookalikes to tell their story without involving them, and the promo is hilarious! The future looks great for Marcus and Rudd. Marcus is everything that Rudd needed to lighten up a little, he has finally realized what truly matters in his life and he will rather focus on his family and business than give way to his insecurities. Marcus has found a home, a family he can call his own. This is all that he has always wanted from his life, and he is finally living the dream with his big brother!
